This may not help but I thought I'd write anyway. We had a band called the Tijuana Dogs play at our wedding. They are a local orange county band that plays in bars but also do wedding. They are about twice your budget but well worth it. I can't tell you how many people of all ages told me that it was the best music they have ever heard at a wedding. They play just about everything, they are terrific musicians, and a lot of fun. Even if you are not interested you should check them out sometime. Their website lists when and where they are playing.
we went with Matthew Short from DJs To Go. he's british and was wonderful. we paid well under $2000 for about 6.5 hrs.
I'm having Jack from TMMPRO. I have only heard wonderful things about him and after meeting with him, my fiance and I knew we had to book him. He is well within your budget. Under $1000 for 4 hours. www.tmpro.com
We went with Tom Chandler from California Sounds and really liked him. http://www.calsounds.com/. $1,000 for 6 hours + 2.5 hours for set up, although his rates may have gone up a bit since we booked him last year.
I'm not sure how much they cost but Vaud & the Villains is totally the band I'd hire if we were doing a live band. They're amazing, so much fun, and will definitely keep your wedding a-rockin' till the wee hours. Check them out at www.vaudandthevillains.com
I am also using Tom Chandler with Cal Sounds. My photographer recommended him and when I interviewed him, he had all the right answers... and he's VERY affordable!
I'm using Tom Rios. PM me and i'll get you his number. He's great and is about $800 for 4 or 5 hours.
We had Tom Chandler from Cal Sounds work our wedding about a month ago and my friend hired him for her wedding in September. HE IS THE BEST!
We will most likely use Tim Coy from Pacific Events. He costs $700 for 4 hours of DJ services. We contacted his references, too, and there was nothing but positive reviews.

does anyone have any experience with a chinese mc/dj in the LA/OC area? i am trying to find an affordable chinese mc/dj in the so cal area. any suggestions are welcomed! thanks
Try Jack Hou at TMMPRO - http://www.tmmpro.com
He is a really good DJ, but doesn't speak in Chinese. He has Chinese emcees that works with him, though.
We used DJ Bernie from Flashback Entertainment. He is well under the price you're looking for, and he was a great d.j. because he was really interactive. I understand now that d.j.'s are different, but we were looking for someone to keep it toned down at certain moments, and to get the party hyped at others. He has a whole list of guest interactive activities and suggestions. The website is www.flashback.ent
It may be tough to get a solid wedding band for under $2000 so I might recommend a DJ.
You really get what you pay for when it comes to band. (And DJs for that matter)
There are some bands out there that are picking up weddings because they need the work but the don't really have the experience of how to run the timeline and creating the proper energy for a wedding which is far different then any other type of band gig.
Just make sure whichever direction you lean you take the time to meet with the entertainment and ask for references from recent clients.
Good luck!
Hey Mister DJ
This is who my cousin used at their wedding, and they were great!
