Ugh!!! My bank is going to start charging me $3 per month to use my debit card! The only way to not incur a fee is if I use it solely inside the bank or at the ATM. Boo. They keep telling me it's only in "certain markets" so don't worry! Well... I live in Georgia so yes, I will be effected.

This is why I love my bank.  They refund me ATM fees from other banks.

What bank is that? Is it a credit union or is it one of the 'too big to fail' banks? Ugh, that sucks big time.

Time to leave that bank.  Take your business elsewhere.

@bellagio: How readily available are Credit Unions? We travel a lot and want to be able to use an ATM wherever we go.

That's so dumb.  I'd switch banks.  My bank is a credit union and has been great.

I bank at a local bank. I pay no fees. They refund my ATM feels up to $20 a month. They give me $0.25 every time I write a check and they auto move my savings to my checking if I go short and charge me no fees.

We should all support our local business' and supporting your local bank is even more important. 1) They know you by name 2) they offer some of the benefits I mentioned above 3) They invest in local community, which effects us and usually our children and future children, since most tend to focus on youth based programs when donating

    PSA END.

@mwitter80: My DH belonged to a local bank. But he was so upset with them that he switched and never looked back. I'm glad it works for you though!

I suggest Charles Schwab Bank.  Your not charged ATM fees anywhere in the US.  I've been w/ them for over 3 yrs and I love them.  They just started allowing deposits via an Android app.  Love. Love.  Love.

We also have a Credit Union but it does not have all the amenities of my internet bank.  That's why we have both.

Hope Bank of America doesn't start with that shit.  I'll pull all my money out of the accounts and use cash.

My bank doesnt cover fees for other atm's but Iam someone who doesnt use cash. When I do I go to local grocery stores they never charge fees when you go through the line and most have a limit of 200$. I do have US Bank and there are several branches arround me but I'd rather be inside to make a withdrawl.

@MissPumpkinPie: BOA isn't doing it now, but they are considering. Time will tell.

    @mwitter80:  Agreed!

And just b/c it's local doesn't mean you can use other ATMs or banks.  My credit union works with other credit unions so if I travel and need to get to a bank or go to an ATM, then I have access to one.  I think if I were traveling overseas, I might set up another account elsewhere though.

I have Schwab and ING and neither charge ATM fees nor is there a debit card usage fee.

Just so everyone knows (since I just switched banks and talked to several bankers and a few friends who are bankers) laws have changed a lot since all of the bank bail outs happened and banks are now required to have fees for a lot of services that were previously free (for example almost no free checking account exists anymore), and this will be becoming more prominent in the near future because most banks were slowly trying to phase it in.... so while that may not be a fee all banks have you will start seeing lots of new bank fees no matter where you bank (except maybe credit unions).

Another issue here is that recently merchants sued/complained/lobbied to reduce the fees that they are charged when a customer uses his/her card at a store.  Visa, in particular was raping them.  The banks were ordered to reduce the fees and just said in effect, "Oh well, we'll have to just pass that on to the consumer".

So, yeah someone is going to pay for it.  Sucks.
