Dear fellow book-crazy bees,
The other day (meaning, right now at work, when i have nothing to do) I stumbled upon this list of banned books. I had forgotten about the “banning” thing because the last time I heard that word was in middle & high school when i was assigned 80% of these books. Needless to say, I have read more than few of these books and loved them all. Sometimes I wish I had time to continue reading some of them but life gets in the way. Further down the page i saw this link explaining where and why these books were banned/challenged. While reading the reasoning behind some of these complaints, I couldn’t help but notice the sheer lack of respect towards history – this is how things were back then. Ugly? Yes. Racist? Sometimes. Nevertheless, this is history and our kids should know what things were like!
My questions are, what do you think of the banned/challenged book list? Have you read any of these books and would you allow your child(ren) to read them just as some of you have?
EDIT: I should add that by “children” I mean anything under 18. Yes, 18.
