It may be calcium or lime build-up. Buy some CLR and follow the directions to see if that helps.
@JamaicaBride: well i forgot to mention that but i havent tried CLR but i did try to use some lime away
Have you tried white vinegar? I've never tried it myself but I heard that white vinegar is awesome for removing hard water... If you have an empty clean spray bottle (if not, pick one up at the grocery store, dollar store or Target) fill it with vinegar, spray the tub.. let it sit for a few minutes... spray it.. let it sit.. and then try scrubbing with an abrasive scrubby sponge (but not one that is so abrasive that it will scratch the finish). I used to use that scrubbing bubbles cleaner but didn't like it for some reason and stopped using it.. I can't remember why i didn't like it (it was a couple years ago).
It sounds like the hard water build-up has become noticeable! What if you use vinegar to soak the tub... (Put in the stopper and pour vinegar in the tub to cover the bottom. Vinegar is probably cheaper than a commercial spray and just as effective!
It definitely sounds like hard water build up. We get it occasionally on the floor of our bathtub too.
Tried the MR clean eraser it did nothing... as gross as that seems because it wasnt visible before i really hope it is just hard water build up... that is what i am thinking that the products just clinged to it and made it visible wereas it never was before....
I will try the vinegar thing and baking soda and if that doesnt work i will just try more of the cleaner i used the first time
I am guessing you did not wreck it - there's just something really bad not coming up yet. Keep at it! Try letting the cleaning solutions sit overnight or for a couple of hours before scrubbing.
It might be too abrasive, but I love Barkeeper's Friend.
My MIL gave me the MegaFoamer but I must have done something wrong with it because it left a horrible residue on the shower door I tried it on. I also used it on the bathtub but it only seemed to clean in streaks despite all my rubbing.
one thing i have found that works the best in our bathroom is Comet Spray Gel http://www.cometcleanser.com/mildewspray.htm it is kind of hard to find, we have had the best luck at walmart. We had some mold in the bathroom that could not come off so we found this stuff, left it on the wall for a couple minutes, came back and all the mold was gone!! we also have hard water and it worked great on that too. You can always do a little test spot to make sure it won't ruin the tub.
Just an update i have decided that I have ruined the bathtub because i have cleaned it so much i am sick of cleaning it and so now i have given up

SO our bathtub is a darkish greyish brownish color a big garden tub with a rippled floor and has like an arm rest ledge on each side inside the tub. It never looked dirty before but I am sure that it was. So i always clean it once a week just like the rest of the bathroom and use a lysol wipe to touch up here and there and between cleanings.
I bought a new cleaner to try because we have really hard water and it makes it really hard to keep our stand up shower clean so i bought
Scrubbing Bubbles Mega Foamer Shower Cleaner... on the recommendation of a friend and it worked wonderful on my shower first time ever it took all the hard water and soap residue and film off without having to scrub it.
Well i decided to use it on my bathtub too and 2 weeks later my tub still looks horrible. On the bottom of the tub there is white spots everywhere in every little ripple and indention it is a white chalky look.
WE tried soaking it, i tried scrubbing it with a brush, i tried comet, i tried bleach cleaner, I tried a scrubber pap, I tried an old toothbrush and toothpaste and a mr clean magic eraser. NOTHING WORKED
THe only thing that seems to help is scratching at it with your fingernails... It seems to come up that way. I dont know if it has left a residue or perhaps broken up some of that hard water and made it visible now. Or if I have ruined the bathtub but it is driving me INSANE!
Does anyone have any suggestions? I have not tried using the product again because I am not sure if it will do better or worse
