My fiance found this photographer he really, really likes. The package we are considering is $8,000 for 12 hours of coverage. To get 2 parent albums and 1 large modern art book is another $3,000. Crap! That is $11,000 already!!!! Are we crazy for even considering this?? What are you looking to pay for a photographer and how happy are you with your photos?

    Hey there,

Which photographer is this in the SF Bay Area?

Honestly, I would just get a package with one album for yourselves and then make 2 parent albums on Blurb. :)

Our photographer is Gene Higa and he is asking $7K for our specific package. This was pricing as of April 2007.

yeah that guy can seriously take leap off the bridge! no way i'd pay that!

In SoCal, we're paying $4K for 8 hours, 2 photogs, 3 albums (2 parents and one for us - coffee table book style), engagement session and ALL the images on disc afterwards. (each addtl hour is $150)

She's done magazine work, weddings, fam portraits, everything.

SHOP AROUND!! sometimes the most expensive option isnt necessarily the best option kwim?

No, I do not think its crazy. If you LOVE him then you will be disappointed with whoever else you decide to settle with. Which photographer are you considering?

The first thing that I did after I got engaged was browse and book a photographer bc that was something I was willing to splurge on. We ended up booking Joe Buissink because I knew right at the moment I started looking through his sample pics that his style was EXACTLY what I wanted. He also shoots with both digital and film.. the b&w photos he does with film is AMAZING. Hes charging us 8500 (I think its 10500 now bc its 2008) for 8 hrs of coverage. He is an additional 1500 per hr. The albums are extra and they range from 1500-3000+ depending on if you want a digital one or leather bounded one. He has a print guy that he's been working with for years and years- the quality of the photos is something I have yet to see from any other photographer.

I guess you just have to figure out WHY he/she charges that much and if its worth it to you. :)

glittergrl    Planned my wedding in just under 6months. Had the most super fabulous enchanted, eclectic, bohemian forest wedding on the planet! :)   CA

Generally good, solid artistic wedding photography in the Bay Area and LA starts at about $5500 and averages in the $7-10k range.

People like Gene, Alisha and Brooke, Meg Smith, Gertrude and Mabel, John Griffin, Jesse Leak, Suzy Clement, etc these people are all boutique style shooters AT THE TOP OF THEIR GAME. You get THEM on your wedding day and they don't do mass bookings. These people are also photographers that get published a lot, so consider that as well --- since they are so good, the mags call them about images and such to see what sort of weddigns they are doing. Just something to think about if you want your wedding published.

Definitely look around at other photog albums, but much of what your hiring for is a photographer that you feel that you click with that gets YOUR personality and photographs in a flattering way or gets the type of shots that you love.

O M G.  Once again soooo glad that I live in a relatively small town.  We are getting really great photogaphers - love their work and them - love their custom albums - already have really great portraits done by them hanging all over the house.  It is a husband and wife team, and we get both of them exclusively the day of, plus our e-portrait session, plus one before or after session, and so far a lot of their time walking down the venue, alone and with us - plus all shots unretouched on cd - for $1500.  Actual album and any portraits are extra, but we already know what their portrait prints cost, and are happy to pay that for the really great job they do.

If you don't have to have a name photographer from SF, maybe you can look somewhere in the east bay, or even inland like Livermore or Pleasanton, and find someone you like.  I agree with glittergrl that the important thing is you like their work and you work well together with them and you get the time and coverage you need from them.  That also means that how famous they are doesn't really matter.

Wow! Those are really high, but then again I'm in MN - and things here are not that expensive.

If it's in the budget, and doable with out strain and you really love the photog. Go for it. The gut feeling about the person should lead you to the right decision - though I'd negotiate and get those books and what not added into the initial cost...8,000 for time and nothing else - is this guy plated in gold....lol?

I'm getting a very good deal as the photog I'm using is a friend who's had her own business for years here. So I can't be too much help on the actual cost of things.

I would say keep shopping. I live in San Francisco and found a fantastic photog for a bit under 4K. We get all day coverage, engagement pics, all our proofs and a 25 page albumn.

When I first started shopping around I found one photog that I FELL IN LOVE WITH. I was obsessed with wanting her. But, after getting a quote for about 10K (which didnt even include proofs...had to buy those separate...oh, and an albumn was 3K)) I decided that I could get the same style for much less. And I did. We got our engagement pic's back about a month ago and they are sooo good. I dont think that I compromised what I wanted at all. I got exactly what I want and saved about 6K. Woohoo.

    our photog is www.hystudio.com

Check them out (the blog is great)

I live in so cal and we are going with www.theimageisfound.com . Your photographer's prices really don't seem out of range.  I agree with doing blurb books for the parents.  There is nothing like having a great photog.  Its the one thing I haven't second guessed.

Ditto everyone above. The quote you got isn't completely out there, it's actually pretty normal for the top-named photographers in the Bay Area. But you can definitely get comparable quality for less money if you shop around and look at various people's portfolios.

I paid $2500 for 8 hours of coverage, plus all raw files and 300 processed files, but no prints or albums. I ended up with over 2000 digital photographs to work with, and I loved them. So you can definitely find a good photographer for less. Just make sure you see LOTS of sample work, and google them for reviews.
