I am throwing a bbq reception in celebration of my wedding this August. Only 14 people attended, so this bbq will have about 75 guests attending. The venue will be a little house on the lake with a large outdoor space, huge canopy with trees, lots of lawn, next to a beach. We are catering in southern bbq, serving some green salads and sushi for vegetarians, wine and beer, and cupcakes. I want to have lots of paper lanterns, table clothes, “fancy” paper plates that look like china and plastic cutlery that looks like silver. We will have a guest signing table with our wedding album and a video playing of our ceremony. I am trying to think of ways to make the event more fun… any suggestions for little party ideas? I will be doing center pieces with jars full of sand and shells, makybe tiki torches too… but I want to make sure the day is nice and classy without being too casual and bbq-y. Any thoughts from anyone? We aren’t doing a cake, a first dance, a dj or speeches. Any creative ideas are welcome!!

What if you had a string quartet playing? I know you said you weren’t having a DJ or dance, but it might be nice to have some music to give it some ambiance.

@jules28: Oh, sorry haha I meant to say we are having music, but just our own playlist from our ipod plugged into a bose. So there will be amibence. But a string quarter would be nice, but probably not suitable for a bbq and also too much $$ haha.

What about some fun outdoor games like bocce ball or badminton? Cornhole? Croquet?

@bakerella: Absolutely, I totally dig that. Love bocce, that will be a blast. Any other small little details that could make it more “wedding” like? I thought about having disposable cameras around so guests could capture their own moments… always liked that idea. But still open to other suggestions!!

@funkymunky85: Let me find the blog post about my friend’s wedding, it sounds really similar to what you’re doing….
Here’s their video (if you look carefully I’m in it playing bocce ball, LOL!):
