I was on BC pills a long long time ago, I stopped after 3 months (I know not enough for it to sink) and I had no side effects other than being over emotional. Well I'm thinking about starting to take the pill again but I'm concerned about some things:

-Weight gain: I'm not what you'd call a model but I'd rather lose than gain weight the year prior to my wedding.

-Decreased libido: I've read about this and it freaks me out, we finally have an awesome, healthy sex life and I'm scared to ruin it.

-Mood: I have depression issues and it scares me to make it worse.

-And I'm in the middle of a laser hair removal treatment and I'm not sure how BC hormones will affect it.

Of course I'm going to see my doctor about this but I want to hear what you ladies have to say about this, do you have any advice or experience you'd like to share? I want to hear about someone's experience before getting the doctor's advice.

Is there some other safe BC method you reccomend?

I think it's just one of those things that's different for everyone! As for the laser treatments, it doesn't seem like that would conflict at all, but I'd check with wherever you're having the treatments done just in case.

When I went on BC, I was absolutely crazy for like three weeks. I have absolutely zero history of depression or anxiety or anything (and I've been absolutely fine every since), but for those three weeks I was an emotional wreck. i would start crying, and then I would realize I didn't even know why I was crying. I was driving on a highway overpass and I actually legitimately though to myself "I could just drive my car straight into that rail... I wonder if I'd die?" A couple times after eating a big meal I thought to myself that I should just go in the bathroom and make myself throw up. I really freaked myself out.

But after those few weeks everything was totally fine. I actually feel like I have more energy on the pill, but I had long horrible periods before, so that has a lot to do with it.

I did gain about 7 pounds, but I was pretty small to begin with, and it seemed like I gained most of it in the boob area, so I was actually really happy about it. Haha. I haven't experienced the decrease in sex drive, but I know a lot of women do.

My only advice would be to not do it right before the wedding. That time is stressful enough, and you want to make sure all of the weird stuff is ironed out before the big day (if you're going to have crazy emotional outbursts like me, you don't want them to be right before the wedding or on your honeymoon or something!!).

Also, remember that you have to give it a month or two to settle... i.e. if you're feeling extra-depressed at the beginning, it might not stay that way.

    Good luck!

     @bluebonnet: Thank you.

Well I guess different brands are different? We still have 13 months before the wedding so in  case there's something wrong I just can stop.

Personally I think birth control pills are awful. They are synthetic, man-made hormones that can really mess a girl up.

I had an IUD for almost 6 years. It was non-hormonal, just a regular copper-T type, and it cost me $50. For 6 years.

Yes, the insertion hurt. Yes, my first three cycles were heavier and more painful. But then it evened out and went back to normal. I didn't have any adverse reactions to it and I highly recommend them to any woman in a commited, monogamous relationship.

That last part is very important!! No protection from STIs, so you have to trust your guy, and be a good girl yourself.

@mtnhoney: I've always think IUD are for women who have more than one kid, I've never been pregnant so I never consider it as an option. I must be honest the idea of it creeps me out a bit, not the copper T but the small (can we call them wires?) things coming out of the vagina. How is it? can you feel it, is it uncomfortable? Also I use tampons so I don't know if that represents a problem.

I have tried a few different kinds of BC (pill, nuvaring, and IUD) and I would say pills come in so many different brands and are different with everyone so it would be hard to tell how you would react.

I just wanted to second the IUD suggestion. Women who have never been pregnant can definitely get an IUD. I have the Mirena IUD which is good for 5 years.  For me it hurt when they inserted it but it was worth it. I've had it for over a year now and I don't get any periods anymore. It is also much cheaper than other forms of BC, I paid $250 after insurance so for 5 years that was a big difference from what I was paying with nuvaring.

@mtnhoney: Thanks for the info! I have been considering a copper IUD because of my issues with BC pills and its nice to hear good information!

OP- You might have to try a few BC pills before you find the one thats right for you! I do know, for me, that the ones that only give you your period 4 times a year are NOT for me! I gained 33lbs in about 2 months and have every pregnancy symptom imaginable (including my feet swelling !) I got on a low hormone one and its better, but I still cant seem to lose the weight even with working out 4 times a week and eating right! Im off the pills for now and am thinking about the copper IUD. Good luck!

@misschickpea: Pregnancy sympthoms? how awfull. Thet's why I'm crazy scared of BCP.

I'm planning to use it just for a year, after the wedding we'll switch to just condoms cause any "accident" won't be such a problem then.

@sweetsunrise: Do you have any problems with the small wires coming out? do you need to get it checked often?

I've been doing laser hair removal and am on BCP.  The thing with that you may want to think about is when you're not taking them (ie. around the withdrawal bleed time) it may be more painful (no more so than around your period).  When you're not on them, you may have less active hair growth.  I don't find it all the painful, so have no issues planning it for when I'm not on the pill, but I go way longer than a month so not all my appointments are planned this way.

Ages ago I used to bleach my arms, and two days after taking the placebo pills I could see the thicker, darker hair growing in.

I think BCP aren't bad. I started on Sronyx a while back and I've had only very minor side effects. There are 9 types of progestin, and you have to find the right one that works for your body. I am on it to control a hormone imbalance, so my doctor did some blood work beforehand. Sronyx (same progestin as Seasonale and Alesse) has androgens, so it's not supposed to kill your libido.

@MeAndDubby: I'm on the generic form of Alesse and LOVE it!

I have been on mine for over a year and it hasn't killed my sex drive or made me gain weight.  In fact, I've lost about 20 pounds through working out and eating better, so I don't think the BCP made that any easier or harder.

I've heard that the weight gain associated with BCP is somewhat untrue, at least according to some doctors.  My doctor said she thinks that the weight gain is more easily attributed to women feeling hungrier when on it and eating more.  I don't know if that's true, but maybe ask your doctor about that and the hair removal.

You may have to experiment to find one that works for you.  Consider a lower dose combination pill.  They tend to be better tolerated and have fewer extreme side effects.

I've been on BC for almost 9 years and it has never affected my weight.

The libido has not been an issue either.

My moods are much more stable when on BC.

I would think if it affected the hair removal in any way, there would be less hair.

It really is something you just have to keep trying until you find the right one.  Talk to your Dr. and make sure if you get on one you don't like you can just call her and get it changed.  I just started the generic of Yasmin which is a lower dose that has the same dose on weeks 1-3 instead of gradually stepping down each week like others.  That helps level out moods also.  I have PMS like you would not believe and BC makes it survivable for me and my FI lol.

@Coffee cup: No, not just for Mothers! I am still childless.

The little wires poke out a bit from the cervix into the vagina, and there is no discomfort to you. Rarely, they cause a prick to the guy in certain postitions though! Very rarely.

Once a month they recommend you have a feel up there with one finger to see the wires are still there, otherwise no check ups needed. They soften very quickly, and adapt to the curve of your cervix.

It's true you cannot continue to use tampons. So I switched to pads entirely. Now that I have it removed I occasionally use a Diva cup, like a Keeper, I'm not sure if that would be ok with an IUD.

As with anything, discuss all options with your doctors, friends, and read online. Like I said, yes the first few months I had heavy and more painful periods, but that was all. After that I enjoyed 6 years of birth control protection!

    Thank you all ladies.

@piglet_625, @MeAndDubby: Have you experienced any mood changes?

@mtnhoney: Thanks for the info! I'll ask my doctor about it. Does the Copper T affect your period like mirena? is it regular to miss periods?
