Maybe there are docs or medical folk that can give you a definitive answer, but if I were you, I'd use backup birth control for a week! My doc has always recommended it when switching from one to another just to be safe. Perhaps it is just for peace of mind, but it's always been worth it to me! :)
Hi! I'm in pharmacy school and deal with these meds all the time at work. As long as you didn't take any time off between the two different medications, you should be fine and not require backup BC.
@Eva Boston Terrier - By time off, does that include the period week? Here's the deets: I finished my pack of Zovia on a Saturday, had my period and took placebos from Sunday-the following Saturday, and then started Microgestin on Sunday after a full week of placebos (so I started the Microgestin on the same day that I would've started my new pack of Zovia after my period). So I'm covered you think?
Sorry, I didn't clarify that very well. As long as you were taking the placebos during your normal days, you should be fine. If you took the placebo AND took another week off or something, that's when you would need backup. Because you are on your regular "schedule" of taking the medication, you should be fine :-)
EvaBostonTerrier - Phew, thanks! TMI coming...FI and I used backup one time this week but had an oops last night and forgot. So we started freaking and wondered if I need to use Plan B...which I'd rather not use. But it sounds like all is well. Thanks a bunch :)
I think you should trust what your doctor told you. It is probably unnecessary to use a backup, but you can for your own peace of mind. If you had a night where you didn't use a backup I would not worry about it; as long as you were taking your pill properly I think you'd be fine.

Hello!
I just switched from Zovia 1/35 (which I had been on for 3 years straight) to Microgestin 1.5/30 - do I need to use a backup method during this first week I'm on the new Microgestin? Any doctors in the house who can give me some insight?
p.s. I asked my gyno a few weeks ago what I should anticipate on doing re: backup and she said since I'm going from a higher dose to a lower dose I don't REALLY need it but I could use it for my own piece of mind. But I would like a more definitive answer!
Thanks :)
