A friend of mine lost her engagement ring at the beach (in the sand, I think). She never got it back :(
I actually went to Hawaii in January for work and when I went in the water, I put a hairtie around the end of my finger. :) My finger turned a litlte purple-ish, but I didn't have to worry about the ring falling off. I would never EVER leave it in the hotel room or on the beach in my bag, so I figured that was the safest option. When I put sunscreen on at the beach, I put the ring between my lips. My friend put hers down on a towel once at Big Sandy Beach in Hawaii and it was fine until a big gust of wind flipped her mat over and bye bye went the rings into the sand. Two hours of searching and one nice lifeguard with a metal detector later, we found them.
I try not to wear it to the beach...someone told me the salt/sand is bad for both the metal and the diamond. I dont know if that's true, but I try to leave it at home. That being said, I DO think it's probably safer to wear it to the beach than to leave it in the car, if that's your only other option.
I undo my watch, slip the ring onto the watch band, and put the watch back on. I know my watch won't fall off and this way it's still physically on me. I do this at the gym, too.
i PREFER to not go to the beach with my rings on, but seeing as how i live really close to one and always have a ready-to-go beach bag in my car, that's not always an option. when i know i'm going to the beach, i leave it at home in a box in a drawer. if it's on me when i have an impromptu beach trip, i just wear it. i'd never leave it in the car and just putting it in my bag or setting it down on a towel would make me very nervous. for my peace of mind, i keep it on me and i don't go in the water. it also helps to have good insurance. :)
I wear my ring everywhere...shower, pool, beach and all. It's a little tight because I have chubby kid hands! I feel naked without it. I have a rockin' tan line from it!
I'd recommend leaving the diamonds at home (not even in a hotel safe) and buying a cheap-o ring to wear when you're traveling. The huge saddness of losing the ring far outweighs the small saddness of missing your ring. I got a plain silver band for $5 from Amazon.com to wear while traveling and it's been a great choice because I don't have to worry about losing it, being targeted for robbery due to visible bling, or breaking it, or having random men hit on me. :-) I got my husband a cheapo band also to wear when we're on honeymoon so he can leave the platinum at home. Same reasons.
I try to leav e it home because I am afraid it might tarnish it. I heard the same thing about seimming pools too. For those reasons I am not planning on bringing either mine or my fiance's rings with us on our honeymoon. One of my friends husbands lost his engagement band while scuba diving on their honeymoon! talk about a waste of money! He only got to wear it for like 3 days.
