I used to live in Myrtle Beach; I saw a couple get married there one time and instead of a gazebo or arch, they created a big heart in the sand using seashells; the heart went around them and the pastor. Then they had pretty blankets on the beach for guests as they only had about ten people at the ceremony. I wish I had pics because it was so cool...
those are really cute ideas!
Can I ask why you aren't renting chairs? I was initially going to nix that idea as well, but upon further consideration for guests, realized it was not an option. Do you have elderly guests? Some people might get tired easily after walking through the sand. My mom freaked when I told her we weren't going to at first, but she convinced me we needed them.
BUT... it would be cute if your guests sat/stood AROUND you and you got married in the middle of the circle. I've seen ceremonies like this. It's much more intimate.
I grabbed a cheap-o aisle runner from Walmart and had a ton of glass vases, filled em with sand and shells, and used those to line and hold down the aisle runner. or you could just grab some cheapie fake flowers and shove those in the sand along the aisle runner.
Our ceremony is only going to be 10 - 15 minutes. I just can't justify the cost and hassel of renting chairs for such a short time period. We're going to have everyone stand in a close circle around us as a sign of unity and never ending love. :) And no, we're not having any elderly guests - but if we were I would probably just provide chairs for them.
Thanks for the ideas too - I like the flower petals dispersed in a circle around us...and I love the candles but we're having the ceremony at 5 pm.
@MaryBethM: I am from Charleston and familiar with Folly Beach. I think it would be awesome to get married out at Morris Island where the lighthouse is at sunset. The lighting would be amazing and the lighthouse and rocks are so beautiful, I think it would be perfect as it! From a photographers standpoint, I think it would make for some awesome photos! :) Best of luck!!!
Our friends got married on Folly Beach last April - it was beautiful! I know you nixed the chairs but the chairs actually added a nice setup - she rented plain white and then did orange/red/pink petals all the way down the aisle...the chairs blocked the wind so they wouldn't blow away.
We're having a beach ceremony in Florida and instead of renting 150+ chairs for every guest we're only renting about 25-50 so that the people that really need them will have a seat and the rest will stand...that's always a great way to save money. Then you make simple flowerballs or buy some starfish and ribbon at a craft store and hang cute decorations from the chairs.
If you're still totally against the chairs - then you could do some mason jars or buckets with flowers (silk or real - no judgements!!)
You could pin some ribbon in the sand to make an aisle and outline...not sure how this would work but that'd be cheap!
You could do a table (for the alter) with a white table cloth and add decoration to the table cloth so that doesn't blow away.
I really like the idea of renting a small speaker with a microphone - her ceremony was so windy we couldn't hear a thing :(
maybe a bamboo run and add pretty plans to the floor? found some pics - good luck - and best of luck on Folly Beach!

My fiance and I are getting married on Folly Beach / Charleston in September. We're trying to keep the ceremony on a tight budget because we're having a reception for 250 people in Wisconsin where we both are from. Does anyone have any simple ideas on how we can decorate the area we're getting married in on the beach? We're not renting chairs for the guests and I really don't want any type of gazebo set-up. Let me know if you have any ideas....and pictures!
