@Vsmart:  I live in Oregon, so I don’t have personal experience at this store. However, 99% of the time in-house alterations are significantly more expensive than going to a smaller, local place.

@Vsmart:  I bought my dress from Becker’s and opted to take it offsite for alterations.  I got the list of seamstresses but I ended up using one recommended from my wedding planner.  A friend of mine also bought her dress from Becker’s and went to Irene’s Studio (which is on the list), and she said she was happy with her alterations.  If anything, it would be helpful to pick a seamstress at a location convenient to you as you’ll be making at least two trips there.

I bought my dress at Becker’s and had my first appointment with Irene at her studio this week. Her place is small, not very fancy (I was cool with it but my mom was dubious), but she seems very good at what she does. I have my next fitting in three weeks, so I can update how it went if you like.

Her prices seemed reasonable (she has to bring in most of my dress, create detachable pieces that cover my shoulders for the ceremony, and fit the bust. I don’t really need any hemming, so that isn’t a cost). One thing: she only takes cash or cheques so bring money with you to the first appointment for a deposit (I didn’t realize this and was caught off guard).

@Vsmart:  Sure thing! You are lucky not a lot is needed. To get the dress to fit my hips (it’s a fit-and-flare, mermaid, whatever it’s called…) I had to buy a size that was way too big in the waist and chest. So she has to move it all in 🙂

@Vsmart:  Update on Irene’s Studio. I went for my second fitting last week. The dress fit! She brought everthing in, moved pieces of the lace so there were no ‘bald’ spots on the dress and made little detachable shoulder covers for my ceremony. We realized that while the dress was the right length when I was standing, it needed to be hemmed so I didn’t fall down when I walked or danced. My final appointment is the week before the wedding in case there are last minute fixes. I’m very happy with her work so far!

@Vsmart:  Thanks! The day was amazing and went off without a hitch (except for the crappy weather). I don’t have my photographer’s pics in yet, but here’s one my friend took. I hope you can see enough of the dress.

@Vsmart:  The wedding was at the Liberty Grand. Though there were a few bumps getting the menu selected — my sales rep left and the new person wasn’t up-to-speed with the file — they were fantastic on the day. They set out candles on the tables and in the ceremony space without us asking them to and our family really enjoyed the food. Everything ran like clockwork.

My photographer was from Carey Ann Photography http://careyannphotography.ca/, and I cannot say enough nice things about her! She was great; her assistant was lovely. Here’s one of our formal pics:

@Vsmart:  What I liked about Beckers was that option, I was considering a dress from there because they had a recommendation at Bloor and Avenue. However, I didn’t end up going with them because truthfully I didn’t like the salon whatsoever. Doing alterations offsite with Beckers is an awesome option, can’t beat the 10% off AND they take responsibility for the work being done in the event its not done right.

I just ordered my dress from Becker’s, and I would love to get 10% off, but I’m just wondering what the current list is like? Are there places for everyone all over Toronto, I just live around the corner from Becker’s so I wanted a place relatively close to them?
