DH and I just bought a house and needed a newmattress and bed. The bed we got was delivered yesterday and is much taller than I thought. It is a platform bed (no box spring) and when the mattress (which is 15.5 inches) is on it, it is quite high. I can climb into it now but if I was disabled in any way or pregnant, I would need a stool to get into bed. I am 5 feet tall and DH is 6 feet tall and he thinks it’s great. Would you take it back for a lower bed?

How the total height of the bed?

Is there anyway to put te mattress directly on the floor instead of slats? We considered this as our bed is super high.

Yes! We recently got a new bed that is in a platform with slats (no box spring) and our old bed was so high, which was hard for me to get in/out, as well as our small dog. My dad made our new frame for us, and he used really short legs, and at first it looked so short while he was building it but now I absolutely love it and never want a taller bed. If you can return the frame for a lower one, do it.
Edit: I’m 5’4″ and FH is 6’5″ and he has no problem with the bed being lower.

My bed is super high too.. I don’t mind. I have a boxspring, though.
Make sure you buy deep pocket fitted sheets.

@MrsWBS: You could buy a metal bedframe (for mattress and boxspring). You want to be careful you don’t void the mattress warranty, though. If I remember correctly from my furniture sales days, you need a proper metal bedframe and boxspring, or a bed with a certain # of slats (or a platform bed) if you’re not using a boxspring.

@Cem0930: I have a platform bed with the box spring and a 16 inch mattress. I know you find it will be difficult once you are pregnant but keep in mind that at your DH’s height it would be uncomfortable for him if you went with a shorter bed. I think by eliminating the box spring you have come to a nice compromise. I’m 5’7” and when pregnant I will still need a stool or help to climb into our bed.

I’m 5’10 and I got my platform designed specifically to be super high. I love it. I can’t stand having to lower myself into a shorter bed. Plus, in my case there is TONS of storage space underneath.

Definitely get a step tool!

our bed here is 22″ off the floor. that’s before the mattress even starts. i love it, he hates it. we have a tiny apartment, so i store a lot of stuff under the bed. it works for this apartment. when we go home in 2 weeks, we’ll be in a normal height bed.
i echo PP’s posts about a stool (: it will help when you have kids, too. they’ll be able to climb in easier.
