So we are getting settled in our place here, and our bedroom is very... plain.

Here's what we have so far:

There's a little cut out on either side of the bedroom. One has my vanity and our laundry bin:

And the other side is where our en suite bathroom and DH's closet are.

Mainly I'm wondering what we could put on the walls to brighten it up a bit as the only window is the one by my vanity.

For a sense of our style this is our living room:

    And dining alcove:

    Thoughts?

Are you allowed to paint the walls?  I would maybe change the color of the wall behind the headboard, maybe even some really cool wall paper?

I always like color, so maybe try a coat of paint on your walls. If you don't like all walls to be painted, you could just do one wall with an accent color.

@brittsnead23: I don't think we are allowed to paint or paper as we rent. So I'm more trying to figure out art or other pieces that would help lighten things up a bit.

Most places will let you paint as long as you paint it back before you go...but if you don't want to do that, one thing I'd recommend is a large mirror ont he wall opposite to your window...it will give the illusion of more space, and you can get some cool ones with funky frames...plus they're cheaper than art :)

Nothing can change a room like paint, but if you're like me and have to live with white walls due to lease rules, stick to colorful wall art. Get one large picture/painting to hang above the bed with a thick, detailed frame. Go with red and gold hues like your bedding.

For the corner, how about a tall vase with a bundle of curly willow branches? Or a tall lamp with a modern shade? It doesn't look like you can fit an end table in the corner, but if you can, I would suggest a dark brown table with a red lamp.

@sara_tiara: There's where we hit a layout problem. The door opens into the room right against the wall opposite to the window.

It's hard when dealing with an oddly shaped room!

@Mrs. Fireworks: Ooo I love the tall vase with curly willow idea.

If I can find a table small enough, that'd be ideal so I could set my glasses, kindle, and maybe a glass of water on it. But I'm not sure I can find one *that* small.

I may go searching through local antique shops and fairs to see if I can find any fun and cheap art for above the bed.

You could use a magazine ladder in that narrow space on the side of the bed for your water glass etc. I'm showing this bathroom pic because it demonstartes that some ladder racks have flat shelves instead of the round dowels.

Get a large print or frame a piece of fabric for above the bed.  Or use the new wall paper they have now that peels off like a graphic and doesn't harm the paint.

Also bring in some more color on the bed. If those are euro pillows, find a euro sham cover in a print that has some of the same color as your coverlet. Add some toss pillows in the same colors. Bring the coverlet up higher and fold back the sheets like this pic- add a throw.

Or, just fold the coverlet narrower and lay it across the foot of the bed.

I agree with julies1949, bring in some color with throw pillows on the bed. Also, if you can't find a nightstand that will fit, try looking for a "phone table." Usually they are tall and skinny and can fit in tight spots, but will still work for holiding a lamp and glass of water or something.

To bounce the light around, I'd fill a wall with mirrors.  I did it in my dining room, which doesn't have any natural light and it worked out well.

@julies1949: I agree I need different cases for the tan pillows. Those were just from our old bedding.  I like the idea of a large print too.

@Mrs. Fireworks: I will have to look into telephone tables, that may be just the right size.

@mink: I really like the wall of mirrors idea. I might run that one by DH.
