I just wrote an entire reply and hit the wrong button erasing it. Ugh. Basically I would go with the 8.50 to avoid having problems getting the engagement ring on from the wedding band being too tight. That was my issue. I still haven’t had my resized. It’s very expensive and I am ok with it for now, I went in to have sized but changed mind next day considering they wanted to charge me $400. I am attaching photo to show my ring with 7.50 wedding and 7.75 engagement ring. You nay be able to see the muffin top.

It would help to see the ring and wedding band you’re considering.

Short answer: So far, by what you’re saying, I’d go with 8.25.

Long answer: It depends on the wedding band width – a thicker band, you’ll have to go up more.  A skinny band won’t change your size by much.  The inside of your band’s worth taking into account, too – comfort fit or a ring with space underneath (ex: prong setting where the gallery’s open on the bottom), will be a smaller size difference than a band with a flat solid inside.

Those bands aren’t too thick, so I’d still go with 8.25 if you plan on wearing both rings together.

@nattiejeanne:  better to size down as they’ll only be cutting/soldering one section, so you only have one break in your ring. Sizing up means cutting at two points which may jeopardize the integrity of the ring.

On cold days my ring spins like crazy to the point where when I’m typing it rotates so much that the diamond is on the inside of my hand. I definitely recommend going the bigger size as its so much tighter when you’re hot. On hot days my ring is so tight I can’t take it off. My finger changes like a whole size and a half! Not to mentioned with the band it’s even tighter.

@nattiejeanne:  I don’t have my ring yet either so I can’t offer any real advice to you, but I just wanted to commiserate! We have extreme cold and extreme heat here with the seasons and I’m really paranoid that my finger will swell a bunch and be uncomfortable. I went for a quarter size bigger than a snug winter fit, and it’s a thin band so I’m hoping it’ll be okay. How nervewracking is it trying to dodge both the dreaded muffin-top and spinning issues?!

Anyway, I’ve heard that you can get sizing beads put into looser rings, so that might be a good idea if you want to err on the larger size?

When did you measure your ring size? It’s winter now and your fingers will swell in the summer if it gets warm, or when you work out, etc. I would probably go with the 8.5 even though you have a narrow band. If it was cold and your fingers were “shrunken” when you measured, I would try working out in the afternoon/evening, then sizing your finger to get a better idea of how much “swelling space” you need.

FWIW, I’m a “true” size 5.5, but can wear a 6 on the same finger (fashion rings w/o half sizes). The ring slips a teeny bit, but never spins all the way around/more than a 1/8 of my finger unless I’m washing my hands. I can get a 5 on but it is WAY too tight &  hard to remove without soaping up my hands. Even with a 6 on, I’ve never had it slip off.

Sizing balls are also great; you could also get a 1/2 size smaller retainer ring to stack in front of your ring if you’re afraid it will fall off. Or, get an inexpensive band in the 8.25/8.5 size with the same width as your ring off of amazon or ebay and wear it for a week to see if it is less constricting.

I do not like tight rings and after working out my fingers will puff a bit but I can always get a 5 on and in cold weather they’ll be loose BUT I still went with a 5.5 for some play and love it never being tight and when worn with my wedding band (5mm) it is perfect together.  This is personal preference though because I don’t like them ever being snug since my skin is just very sensitive to anything.  My fingers have also never changed size through pregancy or weight gain/loss though so that is also something to consider!
