@jmt:  Well, I dont know the specifics of your relationship but I really like Dogeared neckleces:

They have one for basically every occasion. For example, I got my friend the bridesmaid heart in silver even though I am not technically having a wedding party (because she is throwing my bachelorette in another city, etc., and I wanted to get her something!).

If you are a man and the friend is a woman, I would stay away from jewelry.  A gift is a lovely idea, but there is so much romance wrapped up in jewelry of any kind; and it may cause some jealousy and misunderstandings between the two women. 

 

 

 

My suggestion would be a gift certificate to a spa or her favorite shoe store.  Something along those lines would let her know she is appreciated very much.

@jmt: Stay away from jewelry, so no David Yurman. I recently got a leather make-up bag from Tory Burch, it’s really nice and every girl needs a make-up bag! Not sure of your budget but the leather ones are $150-$200.

@jmt:  I’m a little confused – why is another woman going to be there when you propose, and why are you planning on getting another woman a fancy gift? I personally would be uncomfortable if my SO spent more than, like, $50, on a female friend. Of course, I’m pretty frugal, so that’s also a factor – I’d be a little weirded out if my SO spent $100s on a male friend, too, without a clear reason! 

Edited to add – I just saw your suggestion about involving your soon-to-be-fiance in the gift-planning for the female friend. I think that’s a great idea, and you can pick something you’re both comfortable with (and it can be from the two of you, which seems more appropriate).
