I’ve read a couple of posts around here, where Bees said that pre-marital counseling helped them a lot. I’ve never heard of it before, and am going to look if FH and I even have that option here in Spain (I’m sure I could find a spanish church that has options like that, but I’d have to find someone who does it in english).
I just wanted to ask, what exactly happened at your counseling sessions? Which problems were brought up, and how has it helped you as a couple?
I’d love to hear some stories!

We *loved* our pre-marital counseling!
Ours was probably a little different than what you’ll experience in Spain, but I’m happy to share! We got married in a Methodist church by one of the associate pastors, who performed our counseling. Six months before our wedding, he had us swing by and pick up a couple of marriage workbooks. Basically, the workbooks were split up by topic (Family, Communication, Finances, Trust, etc) and it had text and talked about how the Church and Scripture encourage husbands and wives in each particular area. Then there were “exercises” designed to get my husband and I talking through each of the topics.
We began our pre-marital counseling after we read and went through the book. During counseling, we went through many of the topics we had read about in the book, focusing largely on faith, finances, family and communication. We had conversations that we might not quite have had otherwise (“What actions show support of your spouse?” Support is necessary in marriage but wouldn’t have thought to ask that particular question.)
In general, the conversations really made sure we were on the same page and really helped us grow closer to one another and to our marrying pastor as we were preparing to marry. 🙂
