Inspired by this thread I have noticed how many bee's have been waiting 6+ years for engagement. I myself have been waiting for over 7 1/2 years (been together since we were 18 and at college) and am finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel with a promise of an end of 2011 proposal.

I thought it would be nice to have a place for bee's who have been waiting 6+ years to have support [and vent :-)]with those who have also be waiting such a long time. What are your stories?

Great idea Novella! I have been with my BF for over 7.5 years. (sinces I was 19 and he was 20) We have now been living together for the past 1.5 years afer doing long distance for 4 years. I was on the waiting list (in teh top 5) but had myself taken off because I was so unhappy with lack of progress. I am hoping for a proposal in the first half of 2012.

My fiance and I were together for 7 years and 2 months before I finally got my proposal in December of 2010!

I'm (now) engaged, but I can commiserate--I waited nearly 9 years for my proposal (we got together at 18, and 21, and had a daughter at 21/24). I went through stages of being really impatient to not caring, to completely hating FI for making me wait (especially years after our daughter was born), but it was worth the wait, let me tell you! Hang in there, ladies. :]

Bf & I will celebrate our 8th dating anniversary this December!  He's promised a ring within the first half of next year, but I am getting more and more worried as this year ends b/c of all that will be going on: last semester of law school, Bar Exam prep + taking the Bar, at least 1, possibly 2 moves, all the while HOPING for a job offer!  I'm not sure how either of us could plan much of anything durring all that!

Another 6 year person here! We just celebrated 6 years a couple of weeks ago, and based on some recent hints I think the proposal is coming within the next two months

7 years 4 months and counting. The ring will probably be ready this coming week though. Hopefully he won't wait too long after that!

Hmmm I think there should be a distinction between "waiting" and "being a couple". I am waiting right now but I haven't been waiting for a proposal for the past 7 1/2 years. It's only become something I thought and cared about over the past year. Either way, coming up to 7 1/2 years for us.

So, question: Have some of you really been waiting since Day 1 for the proposal?

@VickyAurea: On no...I'd say I was expecting/hoping for a proposal for the last 3 years or so. But I assumed she just meant how long you've been together. :)

@VickyAurea: You're right - should have phrased that better :-)

I did mean how long you have been together - my bad.

To clarify I have been officially "waiting" for 4 years but we have been together 7 years, 7 months.

We've been together 7 3/4 years - since grade 10. We used to talk about marriage in hypothetical terms, but started talking about things more explicitly almost a year ago now (though we knew how we felt before that). Now we've got our stone and will likely be getting the ring made together soon... I'm hoping for a proposal super soon so we can plan a wedding for this upcoming Summer!

So obviously we're married now, but I wanted to chime in and say ... been there! Mr. Jaguar proposed a month before our 7 year anniversary.

I just got engaged in July, but I was a waiting bee for a longggg time. We dated for 6 years before he finally proposed. I had some really tough times waiting, but I'm glad I decided to stick it out because I can't imagine being with anyone else. I think some guys just need more time than others. My fiancee was abandoned by both his parents when he was a baby and I think he had some issues with committment because of that.  I think he just needed to see that I was really, really, committed to him.

    Good luck ladies. :)

@Novella: I knew you were asking how long we'd been together, was just pointing out the difference as I think it's interesting the speeds at which people feel "ready", etc.. :)

Well we are engaged now but we were just shy of six years when he proposed. I was beginning to think it wasn't going to happen.

I am now engaged but I waited 6 years for him to ask! We are getting married next year after 7 years! 6.5 of those living together!

I never doubted him, I just knew he needed more time than I did to prepare himself mentally for marriage... and really, at the end of the day, thats not a bad thing! I would rather he wait until he is ready than just ask out of peer pressure!

We have been together eight years, but I've been waiting for just over 2 years.  I hope that it's coming soon.  His family is getting annoyed, I think, because they refer to me as his "wife."

I'm not as far along as you guys - 3 years and one month for us, but sometimes it feels like 6 years.  :-)   It's good to know there are others out there waiting for "awhile" and I'm not alone.

    :-)

I hope you all get proposals soon!  Not sure when mine's coming.  my boy is coming along slowly.  But, I'm sure it'll happen.  No set timeline, but I'm thinking a proposal within a year....I hope.  Else I'll be joining this thred for real soon.

@lumos: Wikipedia tells me that I've been with my SO since I was in 8th grade, then. (or Year 9, as it was to me) 8th grade sounds so much younger than Year 9! And I don't think it's the numbers, I think it's associations to American TV/films. I never knew what ages any of the grades were but 4th grade and 8th grade get mentioned a lot. While we're on the subject, when does high school start and elementary school and is there another one as well?

School is in session from September to June with July/Aug off for summer break. Elementary can be kindergarden to Grade 5, Grade 6 or Grade 7 depending on the school. Middle school can be Grades 6 to 8 or Grades 7 to 9. Highschool can be Grade 8 to 12, 9 to 12 or 10 to 12. You start kindergraden at age 4 or 5 and finish grade 12 at age 17 or 18.  In the US they refer to HIghschool as Freshman, Sophmore, Junior, Senior or something like that but we don't use those terms here in Canada. :)

My boyfriend and I have been together for 11 years but I'd say I've been waiting for a proposal for about a year.. But then again I don't like to say "waiting" because we've always known we've wanted to get marroed, and we're now in a place where we can :)

@Genuine513: But then a Freshman could be any age, depending on the school? How very strange. Interesting though.

    @VickyAurea:

Freshman is typically grade 9, sophomore 10, junior 11, senior 12. This can be complicated by some colleges/universities using the same system, although mine used the terms first year, second year, etc.

@VickyAurea: No, as Taylor4 said, Freshman is grade 9, sophomore 10, junior 11, senior 12. If the school has grade 8 I think they either call them freshman aswell or maybe something different.

I went to elementary from K-7 then went to a highschool that was 8-12, at the end of grade 9 I moved to a different town and started grade 10 at a highschool at only does 10-12. It was really great because everyone was switching out of middle school at the same time I switched out my old highschool.

    Waitingtobee...    June 1, 2013   Chicago

NEW BEE ALERT! So I have been lurking around the boards for a couple of months now, but this thread finally convinced me to sign up!

I have been with my SO for close to 7 years. We met in college when I was 19 and he was 20. The plan was to get engaged by the end of the year but he has since pushed that to by summertime. He knows I would love a fall of 2012 wedding which now seems like it will not be possible. The other night he asked if I would be interested in a spring of 2013 wedding. This was a huge bummer! By then we will have been dating for 8.5 years and be nearing 28 and 29, ugh!! It is hard because it is just not what I envisioned.

With all that said, I plan to use this board to get me through my waiting journey! So excited to be a part of the group!

    @Waitingtobee...: Welcome!

I've been with my BF for over 7 1/2 years now. We're both 21 (nearly 22) and we started seeing each other just after my 14th birthday.

I don't think I really started 'waiting' though until this past year when he spent a year working as part of his university course. The first thing he did was buy himself an expensive computer! So I started to wonder whether he might put away any of his earnings for a ring for me...  From things he's said though, (don't want to go into too much detail) I don't think he has a ring fund. He could just be saying it so it's a bigger surprise, but from the conversations we've had about marriage, I know he wants to get married in the next couple of years, but I really don't think he's been thinking about asking me in the immediate future. I'm expecting he'll ask around winter 2012-13 when he's been working for a few months.

    I could be here a while! ;)

@Audrey2: Lol Most 21 year old guys I know don't have a tomorrow fund, never mind a ring fund, money management isn't most guys strong point. Pruchaseing a new computer sounds like a typical 21 year old thing to do lol (My FI did the same thing). My guess if he does buy you a ring now, it will be on credit or it will be several years before he has one for you. My FI never had a ring fund, we (yes, we) just ended up having enough money when the time came around that he wanted to propose.
