I absolutely LOVE to read, and my FMIL got me a Nook for christmas...something I really didn't want/have use for, but I'm really enjoying reading on it. It gives me an opportunity to read books that I'm lukewarm about actually OWNING, instead of buying them from a store and cluttering up my pristine bookshelves (I'm weird and shelve my books with a heirarchy of their quality of writing, literary significance, etc...haha I know, so weird).
After I kept seeing people reading "Til There Was You" by Jennifer Wiener, I decided to give it a shot. I'd never read any of her books, but I read "TTWY" in less than 48 hours. Since then, I've been reading some of her other books and enjoying them. Much more character driven than plot driven, and sometimes I feel like they are more "beach reads" than emotionally deep, but they are really entertaining reads. I'm about 60 pages into "Goodnight Nobody" right now and am enjoying it.
Next, I think I'm going to re-read "The Great Gatsby" and then Diane Keaton's new book (can't remember if it's an autobiography or biography)
What are you bees reading right now?/
I'm finishing up the first book of A Song of Ice and Fire, Game of Thrones. I'm also reading Redeeming Love, a Christian love novel. Next I'll be reading Wither and Unwind, two YA fiction books, then I am gonna try to read Le Miserable again.
I'm reading The Hunger Games; I'm halfway through Catching Fire. I started the first book a few months ago but life got crazy and I couldn't devote time to reading. Now I'm pissed when I have to stop.
I'm reading The City & The City by China Mieville. It's a science fiction/thriller, I guess. It kept me up way to late last night not wanting to put it down. I'd definitely reccommend it.
I just finished American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld. Next, I'm onto Mindy Kaling's new book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?
@sweetpea87: FI just finished up the Hunger Games series and is starting on The Game of Thrones!
@Gemstone: Oh, I LOVED "American Wife"!! Such a good book, have lent it to many people! I've also got Mindy Kaling's book in my radar!! Have you ever read anything by Sloane Crosley? Really funny collections of short stories from her personal life. She's so witty and her collections are really entertaining. My favorite was "I Was Told There'd Be Cake"
I'm reading "A Discovery of Witches" and it is ridiculously AWESOME! It's been so hard for me to put it down. I'm hoping to finish it tonight, but then will have to wait for the sequel til sometime this year.
My mom got me The Help by Kathryn Stockett for Christmas. It's actually pretty decent. I hate when books start out slow because that can make or break whether or not I continue reading it, but this book was actually interesting right outa the gate! I may watch the movie when I finish it.
I'm also reading/taking a break from the Autobiography of Eleanor Roosevelt. She was just an amazing woman and I always wanted to learn more about her. It's not a difficult read, but as always with biographies, it can be a little dry. ;)
Recently I've read: The Hunger Games Series, The Art of Racing in the Rain (LOVE)
Right now I'm reading Raven Stole the Moon which I really like and it's by Garth Stein who also wrote The Art of Racing in the Rain
Yay for another Nook user! I've had mine for about a year and got my husband one for the holidays. We love them so much that we used Best Buy gift cards from Christmas to buy Barnes & Noble gift cards so we could get more books!
I'm about halfway through The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides. It's good so far, though I'm really curious to see where it's going in the second half. Over the holiday break I read Ender's Game (very sci-fi-ish, but also really good if you have any interest in that type of thing) and The Night Circus which I really really loved.
Extremly Loud and Incredibly Close, just because the movie is coming out in a few days and I want to read the book first.
I plan on starting the hunger games books after I finish this one
**bookmarking this thread so I can look back for book suggestions :) **
@PitBulLover: Oh, I LOVED "The Art of Racing in the Rain". Loved it. I am a total sucker for all of those dog books. I've had "Cowboy and Wills" recommended to me, which is on my list, and I've thumbed through "Inside of a Dog" which delves into everything from what it is like for a dog to live depending on their nose for most things, to how they guage/interpret the passage of time.
I also recommend "A Dog's Purpose" if you're into books like that!
@twodoghouse: Ooh, I've been interested in "The Marriage Plot" after reading Eugenides' "The Virgin Suicides". I've also heard great things about "Middlesex".
@MrsAu: downloaded a sample of "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" on my Nook and read the first 75-ish pages. It is really good, probably the next thing I'll read. The reviews are stellar, so I'm excited for that.
@MrsWrangler: Such a great book!!
I LOOOOVE discussions like these...it's the best way to get recs for new great books to read.
Has anyone read "The Devil in the White City"?? it's been on my bedside table for a while but I haven't started it yet. I've heard it's fantastic though
I just finished The Help and loved it, and now I'm reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It's very interesting so far! I love any book that makes you think and where everything comes together at the end
I'm reading Atonement but for some reason can't seem to get in to it. I got a few other books for Christmas that I can't wait to dig in to so perhaps I should just get to them and come back to Atonement when I'm in the mood?!? :)
@MissGreen: Hunger games is so good!
I'm reading Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles haha - i've seen interview with a vampire but i've never actually read the books - its good! graphic, but good! i can't put it down.
Right now I am reading The Game of Thrones and have books 2 and 3 waiting on my Kindle.
My most recent reads - The Hunger Games triology, A Reliable Wife, The 19th Wife, Pillars of the Earth
Next up - Cutting for Stone, The Paris Wife, The Tiger's Wife (what is up with all the "wife" books???), The Scarlet Pimpernel, Little Bee
@akp0702: I will have to check all of those out, thanks!
@MrsWrangler: we are reading that for my book club in February, I'm really excited!
While I'm thinking about it, in addition to "The Devil in the White City", has anyone read "Room"?? I bought it in a bookshop in London to read on a train, but got a few pages into it before I got distracted with the people I was with. I heard excellent reviews about this but, albeit that it was a disturbing read. I'm kind of apprehensive about it, but am curious about others' opinions!
@bookworm88: Those books--just like The Hunger Games trilogy--are HUGE. My FI is loving them, and he is totally not a reader (before he picked up "the hunger games" the last book I saw him read voracioiusly was "Rapid Interpretation of EKGs"...yeah, SO nerdy ;). I am hearing such great stuff about them, I might have to check them out...but I'm not usually in to medeival-themed books or sci-fi/fantasy stuff. Do you think those books would appeal to people like me?
How can you guys afford to read that much with your ereaders? I got a Kindle but realized pretty quickly that I can't afford to spend $10 on a book each time I want to read. I read about 2-3 books a week and when on vacation or on a break from work, I read more than that. I haven't been able to use my Kindle as much as I want. The holds on ebooks at the NY public library is insane so I have to wait a long time. I still read my physical books 98% of the time. Anyhow, I just finished A Clash of Kings. I'm finishing up Matched and The Double Bind for the book club and after that A Beautiful Place.
@akp0702: I read Room and it was interesting. However, it was a really weird read for me. You can check out the discussions on the book on the book club page. It's amongst the pinned topics on the top of the page.
@akp0702: I have read Devil in the White City. They made us read it in undergrad, and I found it surprisingly good. My FI's dad *loves* Inside of a Dog, and I have been thinking of borrowing it from him.
Hunger Games was awesome. Now I'm waiting for the movie.
@septcabride: Cutting for Stone is great. Not a quick read, but beautifully written.
@PitBulLover: It is so good! Especially good with other people to talk about it with, I'd think. I just love getting the background of these famous and influential writers/artists.
@bRooklynRocks: Honestly, books are probably at the top of my list of "things I spend way too much money on far too frequently". I can't help myself. I've only had my nook since christmas and before, I would unabashedly buy stacks of books at a time from bookstores because, honestly, I really REALLY love collecting books for my own personal library. At upwards of $15 apeice for bookstore books, the $6-$12 range of the ebooks I've purchased seems more reasonable in my head, especially for books that I don't necessarily want to keep on a bookshelf. Either way, I really spend too much, truth be told.
@akp0702: I'm working on my FI and Hunger Games. He's not a reader, but he will read something good. I hate medieval sci-fi. The more epic-y, the worse it is for me. I could *not* get through Lord of the Rings. But I watched the show, and decided I wanted to know what would happen before it came back next year, so books it is. I was loving it until the war started, now I'm slowing down, but resolving to finish.
@bRooklynRocks: Is Matched really any good? I stalked it when I first heard of it waiting for it to come out, then found out it's supposed to be a love story, and I'm more interested in society than love stories.
@bRooklynRocks: I get most of my books from the library. I am also in a big city and the wait times are absurd, but the lines actually move really fast! I just sign up for books (usually 10-12 at a time) way in advance and wait it out. For Cutting for Stone I was #102 on the wait list, but I got it within 10 days.
@septcabride: I really need to look into checking out books from the library down here...I'm sure wait times for raleigh don't compare to NYC...maybe it would save me money!!
Right now my upcoming reads are The God Delusion, The Night Circus, The Great Gatsby and Slaughterhouse-Five! I have a reeeally long flight coming up to New York and back so I've got lots of reading to do :)
I just read "The Paris Wife" about Ernest Hemingway's first wife - highly recommend it!
I'm reading a few books right now, I'm reading Quantum Wellness by Kathy Freston and I have Veganist by the same author lined up to read when I'm done with that.. And then I jump around and read Becoming Vegan from time to time but it's a bit dry and scientific so it puts me to sleep faster than I learn anything. lol
@CoffeeCup: I loved "The Paris Wife". I acutally read "A Moveable Feast" and "The Paris Wife" back-to-back, so it was really cool to read Hemingway's real account of their years in Paris followed by the fictional account written from Hadley's perspective. If you haven't read "A Moveable Feast", I recommend it as well!
I just finished reading "Everything is Going to Kill Everybody" by Robert Brockway. I believe he's a writer for Cracked.com so you can expect some very blunt facts about the many ways the apocalypse might occur mixed in with lots of f-bombs and sex references. I loved it. I laughed out loud often. I also bought "The Help" and "The Hunger Games" trilogy for my iPad but am in the midst of reading "Angels and Demons" by Dan Brown. I sort of watched the movie, so I figured the book shouldn't be terrible.
I just finished (sort of... I kind of gave up on it) Interview with the Vampire. Which is so hard to admit because I'm a vampire fanatic. I love them. I just could not get into this book.
Currently I'm reading Dead to The World by Charlaine Harris which is the 4th novel in her Sookie Stackhouse series. Maybe this is why I'm not into the classic vampire novels? Because I've gotten used to this lite vampire romance trash? haha... It's so GOOD though!
Next up is probably the 5th book in her series, however I'm getting a kindle for my birthday and then I am reading Pillars of the Earth!
@PitBulLover: I think The Art of Racing in the Rain is my favorite book ever. So damn good!
I just finished "The Autobiography of Mrs. Tom Thumb," about a "miniature woman" who performed in the 1860s in Barnum's circus. Very interesting! I also read "The Girl in the Green Coat" by Laura Lippman, who is a great suspenseful writer and an easy read.
Right now im reading The Historian by elizabeth kostova..... great book, i had to pick it up a few times before i got into it. However I also have the free kindle app on my driod and I am reading several short stories on there as well.
A couple of weeks ago "Major Pettigrew's Last Stand" came from amazon.com. Haven't started it yet...anyone here read it?
