FI and I are in the process of buying a home, we are under contract? I think that is the correct term. Anyways, we are thinking of adding a patio in the backyard or a deck? Not so much for entertaining (although we’ll use it for that too) but for relaxing on a saturday morning with my coffee or at night with a yummy drink.
Which one do you prefer?

I personally love decks…I have a patio but I would LOVE a deck in the future.

We have two decks and a patio and I personally prefer the patio. We have flowers around ours and it’s just more relaxing and park-like to me.

I once read that decks have a higher return than patios. However, they are quite a bit of maintenance. We have to powerwash and stain ours almost every summer or else is begins to look faded. I would probably go with a stamped concrete patio given the chance.
Another thing to consider, how much privacy do you want? Decks that sit up higher are usually more visible to neighbors. I like being both social and nosey, so I don’t mind. If you want privacy, a patio and privacy fence might be a better fit.

I’ve only had a deck but I’m certain a deck is more maintenance than a patio. A deck is pretty but it requires pressure washing and staining each year or it will look old and faded.
I think a paver patio is beautiful.

I definitely prefer stamped concrete or paver patios. I like how they can be open on all sides to your yard and have beds around them. I also don’t like how decks tend to end up looking worn after a while, how they can splinter, etc.

As someone with zero outdoor space, I say – EITHER! They are both wonderful.

Really depends on the lot, I think.
Screened porches are my favorites.

We have both, and I prefer the deck. Although I also love paver patios like the photos above. If we ever have enough money, I would love to re-do our patio.

I want both! I have a deck and next year we are going to put stairs on the other side of the deck and have it lead out to the patio. I think it depends on your house set up. It’s great to have something directly off of our slider doors. We have a raised ranch so the deck is perfect because it’s directly as you walk out and easy to carry food/ drink, etc. outside. I think if you have to step down to a patio a deck would be great, but if you have no step down (I just think of carrying dinner outside for nice nights) then I would do a patio. I think a patio is also much less maintenance.

I prefer patios but that might be because no one here really has decks but everyone has patios. Actually now that I think about it, I’ve literally never been to a house in southern california with a deck. Hmm I wonder why that is.

Thank you! All of you have given me so many things to think about!

I honestly don’t have a preference. So long as I have usable outdoor space, I’m in great shape!

I think decks look pretty but I have always gotten more use out of patios. And, as CanAmBride mentioned, decks are pretty high-maintenance.
