I just want to know if it’s typical for a cakemaker to charge for delivery. Our cakemaker is charging us $50 for delivery, even though we are about 17 minutes away from their place of business. We have a very small two tier cake, small enough to fit in a standard fridge.
Would it be better for us to just pick it up ourselves? I’m nervous of dropping it, or ruining it somehow.

I think that’s normal to charge a fee. Whether you should do that or pick it up that’s up to you.

SprinkleDonut: As far as I know it is normal. 17 minutes doesn’t seem like a long time until you have to balance a cake.. We had ours delivered, granted In not in the US so how much it should cost I have clue on. You could take the risk but then if something happens the baker has no obligation to try fix it

Pay the 50 (yes it’s normal) and let the pros handle cake transport. For sure. Too much stress/risk to DIY

Thank you, ladies! I definitely appreciate the input. I’ll definitely let the pros just handle it. I think it would just add one more thing to stress about if I tried to pick it up.
It was just something I was wondering about. 🙂

Definitely normal, and you’re right, don’t try to pick it up yourself! The day of the wedding, you don’t want to stress about having someone pick up the cake, OR that someone might drop it!

SprinkleDonut: That sounds about right. There’s gas and probably two people that deliver it that need to get paid. I would rather not have to worry about how my cake is going to get there, personally, and have the people deliver it.

Pay it! Because if they mess it up, they will fix it or replace it. They have the experience, in handling cakes.

I make/design/decorate cakes. I’ll deliver for free in our town. Any further and I charge $15. Every time I deliver a cake, the ride over is filled with anxiety and sometimes sheer panic. You have to drive slow and hope no potholes have come along to ruin a creation you just spent 20+ hours on.
Its worth it, just so you, as the customer, don’t have to go thru that delivery drive.

My bakery charged a fee if your cake was less than a certain amount.
