Did anyone honeymoon in Belize? Where did you stay? We are looking at The Phoenix Resort. I'd love to hear your stories!

@SaraP2012:  I didn't honeymoon there, but I've been to belize twice and loved it both times.

The first time I spent a week up in the jungle on a horseback riding trip and stayed in small cabins with no electricty. Awesome experience, but probably not your idea of a honeymoon.

The second time I went, we stayed at Jaguar Reef and it was fantastic. There were a lot of honeymooners there as well as a wedding.

It was a great resort with lots of great excursions both inland and out on the water.

I love Belize and would go back again.

We did! We stayed at the Royal Belize, which is a little private island off the coast, nearest to Dangriga. They've really raised the prices since we went, fair warning;) We absolutely loved it though, it was amazing

We didn't venture onto the mainland much, but I just wanted to share some advice the owner of the island shared with us: Belize is still really developing. They're pushing tourism before they're necessarily ready for it, there's one paved highway in the country, so it can take a long time to get from A to B because of the condition of the other roads. We experienced this going from the airport to the harbour, where it would have taken maybe 15 minutes here, it was about an hour there because the pot holes in the road. Not a big deal, but if you're driving, don't plan on anything taking as long/short as you think it should ;) He said to be careful of where you book, because while the resort itself is lovely, you don't know what's on either side of it. So I guess, just do your research. I got the feeling that if you were going to be on a resort, you'd be fine, but if you're planning on traveling about, Costa Rica may be a better choice.

Thanks, everyone!!! I am not sure what we will do about a honeymoon right now. We are trying to figure out where to go so we can save up!

I've been to Belize twice, over a decade ago.

Belize City is scary. Pickpockets, thieves and thugs everywhere. We stayed on the Cayes, did snorkelling and chillin with the Rasta locals. Cheap bungalows on the beach. Backpackers style.

Not sure I'd recommend it as a good honeymoon place, i heard about a lot of thefts. But then again, it happens almost everywhere- you always have to be careful and not flaunt your money or be too 'friendly' with locals. Sucks, but it's true.

@mtnhoney:  We only connected through Belize city and felt safe the whole time we were there.

The staff was super nice, the resort felt super safe and since it was all included or on a tab we never had to carry money around.

My fiance and I love to travel, but have different style. Belize was one of our best trips. It has something for everyone and lots of romance.  I would recommend Victoria House in Ambergis, Caye's, or going inland to San Ingnacio and staying at one of Coppola's places.

Haven't been but have lots of friends who have - heard it was unbelievably gorgeous and had a little more adventure than a typical beach honeymoon.

In terms of safety, I've heard it's like most similar places - there are pockets of crime, and you have to be vigilant with your belongings and not look like a "naive tourist", but I'd say go for it! It's definitely on our list of places to visit.

We are honeymooning there in May. We are staying 4 nights at Mystic River Resort in the jungle, then onto the owner's bed and breakfast in Ambergris Caye for 3 nights. The owners of MR have been helping us plan and are so awesome! They have impeccable reviews on Trip Advisor. Good luck!
