We'll most likely be headed to St. Lucia for our honeymoon but imho, I'm not headed to central America for a while due to the dictator in Venezuela threatening to wage war w/Columbia. I'm just going to be Suzy Safety and stick around the US or Carribbean or Europe for a while.
Also, T's been to St. Lucia before and raves about it! He loved it so much! There is actually tons to do but it's so naturally beautiful.
If I were to head to Central America, I'd wanna hit Costa Rica! It's definitely on my radar, but the when is the question.
Venezuela and Columbia are in South America, not Central -- that's kind of like not going to Greece because of Iraq ;) Costa Rica was on our list for a long time, but we just never found any resorts that really grabbed us -- not sure why. It is so hard to choose between Belize and St. Lucia!
I went to Belize (Ambergris Caye, very close to San Pedro) for a week last March and I LOVED it! There were sooo many activities, so if you're the type to want to go out and do things, I'd suggest Belize. We went on a guided river tour, to the Belize Zoo, ziplining in the jungle, & to some Mayan ruins. That doesn't even mention the snorkling, kayaking to the reef, and thousands of other things to do. The beaches weren't too "beachy", because of the reef and the shallow water, but playing in the surf isn't really my thing. My DH went exploring the coast for things while I read books under a palapa umbrella and we both enjoyed taking bike-rides & walks along the beach.
I've never been to St. Lucia, but I think it depends on what you and your FH want to do while you're there.
The week and a half that I spent in Belize was, hands-down, one of the best trips I've ever taken. The country is gorgeous and there's plenty to do, but I'd recommend going further inland, to the Cayo, rather than spending all your time in the coastal area.
I'm leaving on Friday morning for my Honeymoon to Belize! I am excited by all the great things said here and by other bees who have been so I'm hoping it lives up to it all!
We're going to Belize next month for our honeymoon! Can't wait and I'm glad to hear all the positive things. We love the beach, but we're not really into laying around and being still. My husband is always going 100 mph so we need activities. Belize has tons of things to do.
That being said, we looked into St. Lucia and it looked absolutely gorgeous! Our friends went there and couldn't say enough about the place. Although I've heard it can be a little pricey and the areas surrounding some of the resorts are very poverty stricken.
I live in Belize, and the Phoenix and Ka'ana are some of the nicest hotels here!!
Also, Columbia and Venezuela waging war against each other does not have anything to do with Belize....We are not even in that continent...
Anyway, San Pedro (Ambergris Caye) and Cayo are both beautiful places. Be sure to eat at the Sunset Grill in San Pedro... it is on the lagoon side of the island on a bridge over the water and there are huge Tarpon (fish) swimming around and they give u bait to feed them (if u want) it's very cool....plus the food is good!!
Let me know if u want to know anything else about Belize, I'll be happy to answer any questions...
I also recommend Placencia which is down south....I'm having my wedding there in March!!
So after doing some research, I'm a little worried about getting malaria or dengue fever or traveler's diarrhea....these are not things that would usually deter me, but being sick for the honeymoon would be the worst! Am I just overreacting?
We are so close to picking Belize except that we would like to lay on the beach for a few days. Question about the Caribbean for those who have been: is the water really, iike, clear? Recently I've been lame about getting in the ocean (Atlantic) because of an intense fear of jellyfish, would clear water make that better or worse?
Hey there jparks,
My husband and I just got back from the Sandals Grande in St. Lucia. We spent 6 nights there, and really had a great time. Yes, the water is really clear, and since we stayed at the Sandals, we didn't have to worry about any traveler's diarrhea or foreign diseases.
We did not see a single jellyfish the whole time we were there. The beach was fabulous, and the weather was divine. We had a lot of fun there, and really enjoyed ourselves.
PM me if you have any specific questions. I can't tell you much about Belize, but we would highly recommend St. Lucia!
We went to Costa Rica last year (I know it's not Belize, but at least it's Central America) and were fine re: mosquitoes, malaria, dengue, traveler's diarrhea. I've been to Kenya for short visits and a fourth-month stint and avoided these, so Central America felt like child's play, plus I didn't have to worry about getting eaten in the night by a lion. Just be smart about mosquito repellent and the water you drink. Bottled water is everywhere though, so that's no biggie. We were in CR in July and I saw maybe 1 mosquito, though we were traveling in some areas where malaria is endemic. Just be careful basically and use common sense and you'll have a great time. Of course Chartreuse who actually lives in Belize probably has better insight than I on this!!
I think I might have to convince fiance to do some Belize research for the honeymoon now!!
chartreuse, we are looking at placencia for our honeymoon in april. ive heard great things about except that the beach is not really swimmable because of sea grass...do you know anything about this?
jparks, we were also between st. lucia and belize but have almost committed to belize because of the activities and tranquility of it!
us too! haha we just bought a guide book for belize to plan our itinerary....st lucia sounds beautiful but there is just SO much to do in belize!
readytobewed: there is sea grass along the beach in some places. Hotels usually have a pier with a ladder further out from the beach where u can swim in deeper water with less grass. Down south by Placencia are some of our most beautiful islands (we call them cayes), it is really worth it to visit them. OH!! and around March/April is whale shark time!! u can do trips to try to see them, and stop off at the cayes for great swimming and snorkelling. I didn't see any when I went tho :( And I also want to recommend The Placencia Hotel , their pool is the best pool i've ever seen in Belize. When I went there, we didn't even care about swimming in the sea. PLus the pool is right ON the beach....i'll try to find a pic, cuz the pics on their website don't do the pool justice.....
also i recommend cave tubing and zipline thru the jungle.... SOO FUN!
We have been talking with a travel agent and have almost decided on St Lucia but we are looking to stay in the Sandals La Toc ....
Just a random fact that the travel agent told us i dont know if this just applies for St Lucia or all of the caribean islands but she said absoultely NO CAMOFLAGE clothing of any sort or colors or prints that would resemble camo are allowed on the island
chartreuse- that is where we are staying!!! we just decided this morning that we were going to commit to belize! ah im so excited!! we talked about the whale sharks and also the cayes and snorkeling. i think that it is going to be perfect for us :) thanks so much for all your help! any other tidbits you care to share please feel free!!

We've FINALLY narrowed our honeymoon choices down to 2 places.....splitting 8 nights at the Sandals Grande and Ti Kaye Village in St. Lucia or splitting 8 nights at the Phoenix (San Pedro) and Ka'ana iin Belize. Has anyone been to either of these countries/resorts?? What did you think? We're leaning towards Belize because of all the activities, but I hear St. Lucia is beautiful....
