We aren't quite ready to TTC yet but I think 2012 will be our year to try. I have the most random question....

I got a belly button ring when I was 16. i'm almost 26 so i've had it for 10 years and have thought several times about taking it out but just havent done it yet. I really loved it at first but now i could really care less about having it or not having it but i feel like my stomach looks funny without it so that's why i have avoided taking it out.

I've heard that if you don't take it out and let it close up before getting pregnant it can be really painful. I don't plan on keeping it in through pregnancy but I don't know if i should go ahead and take it out now or if it will be ok if i take it out when i get pregnant or my belly starts to grow. Does anyone have any expereince with this?

told you it was a random question haha.

@totheislnds:  my understanding is that when you've had it in that long, it won't close up. So once you get pregnant, the hole will just spread and get bigger with your belly. This doesn't happen to everyone I suppose, though, so you could be safe.

I also have had a friend who took theirs out and thought it had closed up, only for it pop oen and get infected when she got bigger :/  Probably not likely to happen to you, but hopefully more people will have experience with it

I had mine for about 10 years and then just took it out and never replaced it. The whole is barely there and would have to be redone it I ever wanted to wear one again but it did not hurt or give me any problems at all.

I had mine since 18 and have had 3 babies.. it did get stretched out some, I took mine out for good on 2009 bc it just bothered me and I didnt have any desire to wear it anymore, out grew it lol. I had some issues putting it back in but it was ok. I used an earring back to poke the hole and then stretched it out with the ring.

If you did want to keep it there are flexible pregnancy "retainers" for belly button rings.

I had mine for over 10 years when I got pregnant. I left it in until it actually got in the way of ultrasound pictures. When I took it out, I had no problems. I've actually ahd it out for over 3 years and the hole is still there.

Thank you for asking this question for me!! I've had my ring in since 16 too..i'm 27 now and we will begin TTC this year!! I've been thinking about it too--It actually hit me recently that I had it pierced haha.I had forgotten since it just became a part of me =). I'm going to remove it once I get pregnant and start to grow =)

I took mine out last summer after having it in for 9 years, and it's grown over persay (couldn't get a ring through there), but the hole is still there, and from what I've read up on it, it always will be. I really never thought of it stretching during pregnancy though....eek...I too which I had thought more of these things before deciding at 16 that it just had to happen haha.

I got mine when I was 19, had it taken out when I was 27 and about 4 months pregnant. It has been out for nine months, and there's not a hole anymore, but there is a very small scar. It did not/does not hurt at all.

I did mine at 16 too! lol. I am now pregnant and I took it out 2 days ago. I have quite and ugly hole :( and I hate it. I had it catch and tear like a year after I got it. I am really hoping that it grows over a bit. I totally forgot about it until 2 days ago. It just kind of became a part of me.

I had mine for 14 years, and I took it out at about 18 weeks pregnant or so.  It started to get uncomfortable.

Now, because my belly button is more shallow, both holes are, like, in the middle of my stomach.  It looks really odd!

I had my belly button pieced around 16 years old - took it out at 21 and sad to report the hole never went away (i'm almost 29 now). I am not sure i could fit through a huge belly button ring, but an earing back still goes through very easily. A very close friend is 30 weeks now and did the same thing - she does have 2 odd looking marks where the peircing was but nothing crazy- just looks like the hole marks have stretched along with everything else. I think in our generation this is going to be a very common problem!

I wouldn't worry about it for now, I think even if you take it out now it's not going to make a difference on how it looks on a baby bump. So - if you enjoy it, leave it in until you feel the need to take it out! :)

    Good luck!

I don't know about pregnancy but I got mine done when I was 12 (I was in high school, young I know) and I'm 21 now. Over the last 18 months, I have not worn it at all. In the last 3 years, I have maybe worn it for a month at a time once or twice. I can take it out and put it back in at will. It depends on your skin I suppose. All of my piercings (14) have always stayed open no matter how long it doesn't have jewelry in it. In a few months when we are TTC, I will take it out when I find out I'm pregnant. I just think my belly looks funny without it too.

@sooner365:  did you keep it in through pregancy? how did that go?

@Aure:  who knew!? i'm looking that up even though i'm not sure i will keep it - i'm getting old haha

@TheFutureMcBride:  that is awesome to know! i'm glad it didnt give you any issues - i kinda figured the hole would still be there for most people. My sister had one and has since taken it out and still has her hole too - i can deal with a hole haah.

@bride2bejc:  HAHA you are welcome! i'm glad i'm no the only one who thought about this sort of thing! good luck TTC this year!

@Mrs.H2B:  too bad we can't time travel haha! i would totally advise my younger self to NOT get the belly button ring.

@Tatum:  That makes me feel so much better! thanks for posting

@PennyLainne:  Thats exactly how i feel about it, its kind of become a part of me and I dont like the way it looks without it. maybe it just takes some getting used to...i hope!

@heathaah:  haha that is exactly what i imagine mine will look like as well.

I don't have one, but my SIL did. She took hers out before she got pregnant with my niece and nephew and never put it back in. She said the only problem is that it got really stretched out and looks a little funny now, but no issues with infections or anything!

THANK YOU FOR ASKING THIS!! I have wondered this myself! I'm hating my 18 year old self right now for not thinking about this. I always thought it would just close up no problems when I decided to take it out.

I don't have a belly ring but I did have my ears pierced with three holes and I haven't worn earrings in the 2nd and 3rd holes in about 8 years and they still are visible, not sure if they are open all the way but they probably are.

I got a belly button ring and my nipple pierced at 16. At 20 I took them out and 5 years later they still haven't finished closing up. The holes on either side are clearly scarred open and the centre is likely slightly closed. Unfortunately, holes like that don't close up after that much time.

I had my piercing for probably 8 or 9 years and took it out maybe two years ago? I still have a hole and so far at 25 weeks pregnant, the hole looks no bigger than it did on my pre-pregnancy stomach. I'd actually say it looks smaller because my stomach has stretched out and where before it looked as if the hole would still accept a piercing, now I see that its actually grown over because the stretching made it more shallow. It kinda looks like I took a pen tip and poked it into my skin until it left a little indent. Who knows what it'll look like when I'm enormous though

I had mine pirced about a year and the doctor made me take it out. I don't remember when or why but they did it for me. When I had my appendix out they took it off too. Couldn't operate with it in. I had my son at 19 and put the ring back in after I had him. After my apendix was taken out I had to have it re done. Im 31 and still rock a belly button ring:)

I have had mine for 11 year snow. I don't really care about it, but I have also heard it can stretch out really bad if you take it out during pregnancy. I am currently 25 weeks and have my normal barbell in. I purchased a pregnancy flexible one, have no need for it yet and will keep the old one in until it hurts. The way I am going I think I can make it the whole pregnancy.

LOL, I literally just checked it out to see how it looked :) I got mine in at 20, baby at 32, I took it out sometime during pregnancy, I honestly can't remember when.  The hole is still there but not super noticeable - I am over the belly button ring so I never put it back in, no idea if I could or not.  All in all, yeah I wish I didn't have the hole anymore but I suppose I could have done something worse at age 20 :)

Lol, I guess this settles it--never getting a belly button ring since I doubt I will want one when I am finally done having kiddos in five or six years.
