I’m not a mom, but a gift I’ve given 3 times now is the Baby Bjorn Bouncer chair.  Everyone loves it — their infant sleeps in it, hangs out in it, it’s the go to most used item they got for their baby shower hands down.  http://tinyurl.com/5tqd6pg

I don’t have any babies but I am an aunt to 9 nieces/nephews!  My siblings always appreciate when I get books for their baby — things like Curious George, Dr. Seuss, Where the Wild Things Are, Little Bear, and Winnie the Pooh.  These books are classics and will last the baby through their childhood.

And of course this is just an opinion — good luck! 🙂

One of my girlfriend’s recently sent me this in the mail:

It’s a Kate Spade baby bag (the lining matches the changing pad).

I absolutely adore it because it’s got all the pockets for baby stuff but doesn’t look like a “baby bag”. Plus it’s black after lots of use it still won’t look dingy. It was more of a gift for me than the baby – but I know we’ll get TONS of stuff for him.

@camrie:  That is such a cute bag!

@agerard23:  I know what I am adding isn’t the post original but the most used things for me happen to be a baby swing that goes either front to back OR side to side. And one of these fisher price chairs. http://www.babiestravellite.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=FPNTFR&Category_Code=06-travel-gear-accessories&Store_Code=BTL  It converts from baby to toddler and it folds flat so I could take it with us when we would travel.

You can’t go wrong with Aden and Anais swaddle blankets or with Trumpette socks.  You can’t go wrong with books either, especially with classics.

Probably my most used gifts that I received were my diaper bag, hooter hider, cloth diapers and my Ergo baby carrier.

If you feel like you know her taste, I like the diaper bag idea. I don’t feel bad registering for nicer-than-necessary stuff for the baby (I can usually justify it somehow)  but I haven’t put a diaper bag on my registry because the ones I really want are more expensive than I’d feel comfortable asking for 🙂   So that might be a fun way to splurge a little on her (if that’s what you’re going for) with something she would definitely use and might not be willing to otherwise ask for or to buy herself.

-Larger sized clothes that were the right size for the baby and the season- before I had kids I bought a girlfriend a cute snowsuit for her baby in a size that would have fit him mid-summer!

-Robeez shoes- they really don’t fall off

– a cute gift for a city baby is the book “Urban Baby”, a black baby toque, t-shirt and jeans.

All of my friends who had babies said they loved getting tons of diapers in all sizes, it seems lame but lots of mommies love how much money/time spent running to the store it saves them!

Since we’re planning on having more than one kid I’m hoping some of the stuff will last more than one kid so I’ve been reading lots of reviews on everything we purchase/register for.  People are pretty honest how things hold up in wash and use.

Right now the things I’m most excited about are cute cloth diapers because I’m a bit worried no one will get them and I’m kinda a bargain hunter so will just end up getting whatever I can find on sale, some decorations for the kiddos room, and a supply of natural baby care like sunscreen and bugspray so I don’t worry about lotioning her up in the summer time.

Gee, I hope the people that buy us presents go for diapers (NOT in newborn sizes) and clothes that are seasonally appropriate and in 6 month+ sizes.

A gift that I didn’t think to put on my registry but think will be great and used often is the Moby Wrap. It’s avaliable at BabiesRUs and most other baby stores too. It is $30 too, so the price is right.

@Miss Sapphire:  My only worry with getting seasonal clothes in bigger sizes is that kids grow at such different rates.

@Lozza:  I totally agree, although having a late summer baby I’d love some winter clothes even if I have to roll them up.  I’m afraid people aren’t going to want to buy anything other than cute summer stuff.
