- Wedding: May 2013
Planning a wedding is umm…expensive as hell to say the least…Plus we had the price of wedding bands looming over us like a dark expensive cloud….
My Fiance, Michael and I were budgeting over $1000 for my ring alone and even that had us preparing to compromise on what I wanted. I was budgeting about $400 for his band.
A few months ago we went to one of those International Diamond Centers that promise to save you thousands by cuttin gout the chain store mark up when they were having a “huge wedding band sale”….
I use quotation marks for a reason….
They were complete sharks! We looked at rings that were just above our price range…we then went to another counter to look at “cheaper options” that ended up being even more expensive. I’m not sure they know that bigger numbers don’t mean cheaper….We then went back to the first counter to look at the first and previously less expensive rings again. There were no written prices on anything but Michael had been keeping track of prices on his cell phone. Had he not, we might have been taken advantage of big time….suddenly the prices they had gave us the first time had gone up. I made it clear that we were price conscious and they tried to show us so many rings that they thought they could confuse us. Needless to say, we left very stressed out and disappointed (and of course ringless). Even with their “huge one day only sale” the ring I wanted ran about $2000 and Michael’s ring was about $1000. However, I do recommend going to their huge wedding band sale because they give out free wine, cake and appetizers…As I bride, I feel like it’s my duty to eat lots of cake…for planning purposes of course….Michael agrees and is always happier to do wedding stuff when free cake is involved.
After our we recovered from sticker shock, we thought we’d go to some of the chain sotres at the mall just to look at prices so we could set a realistic budget. We ended up at Ultra Diamonds at our local mall in Bluffton, SC mainly because it’s across from the Abercrombie and Fitch Outlet and I always have to go in there and get a $70 sundress for $9.90. We figured that those chain stores would be way over priced but that it wouldn’t hurt to look. (Really, when does trying on diamond rings ever not sound fun?) We even left our checkbooks and credit cards at home because we knew we were just going to get an idea of what kind of ring budget we needed to set. Michael even said word for word “I’m NOT buying anything today.” Hahahahah that’s what he thought!
They were really nice and we both tried on a few rings and found what style of rings we wanted (and definitely did not want…seriously some rings are only acceptable if you have just won a superbowl). There was a sign by the ring I liked that said $288…I figured that was per month for 12 months or something liek that but when I finally asked how much it was she told me that it was an Ultra deal for $288…I replied with “Per month?” She probably thought I was an idiot. We could not believe it. The ring is gorgeous! We left the store with the promise to come back and went to check out the other diamond stores in the mall just to compare and see if anyone else had similar sales. I think we were just in shock and needed time for it to sink in. We sent pictures of the ring to our moms and to my future sister in law (my MOH and a newly married bee) and they all approved! Other stores (Zales and Kay I think) had similar rings for about $1200. We went back to the store and bought my ring! Full insurance was about $40 and they sized it for free. I think with tax it came out to about $350…Now my only problem is that I have to wait till May 26th to wear it which is not a terrible problem to have.
Long story short we got the best deals of our life! Just thought I’d share it with my fellow bees! I dont know how often they have these deals but its worth a try to look!
Here it is with my engagement ring! It’s a 14 karat white gold with quarter karat diamonds that go half way around.
They had ok deals on men’s rings too but we didn’t buy his there. Michael tried on a few and we ordered one just like the one he liked on overstock for $40 with free shipping!!! It’s a tugsten ring which is very manly sounding and its very simple. I’m glad Michael didn’t want one of the tacky superbowl rings…seriously I think I blind man designs most of the mens rings…. Only problem with this ring is that you have to order it 1/2 of a size smaller than normal but thats not big deal 🙂 I almost feel bad for getting him such an inexpensive ring but he loves it and he loves that we are saving money even more! It’s exactly like the ones from Ultra and the ones from Savannah only we didn’t have to sell any organs or God-forbid pull money from our already small floral budget to pay for it! Win!
Now we feel like the weight of the world is lifted off of our shoulders now I can worry about things like table cloths and chair sashes and how the heck I am going to hand cut 200 invitations…
For the record I do not work for ultra or overstock…although I wish I did because I’d love to use an employee discount on diamonds and rugs and stuff…I mean who wouldn’t?
What do you think? What kind of good deals on rings have yall found?
