I second @danadelphia...I love Make Up For Ever's HD foundation and I also used their primer. Bare Minerals is a great foundation for everyday wear but it doesn't photograph as well
My photographer told me I could just wear my everyday makeup...Bare Minerals. I mean, I'm not really super worried about how my skin looks in photos because that's her job to make sure I look good, right? lol.
I also second @danadelphia 's rec for Make Up For Ever HD Foundation!! I tend to get kinda oily so I also used to Cargo foundation primer underneath and their pressed powder on top to set the foundation, both from their blu ray line.
@kate169: It's true that Bare Minerals doesn't photograph well. The SPF in the poweder is very reflective and makes your skin look really pale when the flash hits it.
I used Make Up For Ever's HD foundation too. It looked great all night, even when I started sweating like a pig on the dance floor. I didn't use a primer, though. I got a sample of the foundation from Sephora to use at my bridal shower as a test-run, and then another sample to take to my wedding. I would totally buy a bottle of it though, it was great.
Oh man, I have never heard of this Make Up For Ever HD. I just googled it and it looks awesome. Now my question is...does one try to find a makeup artist who uses this, or should the bride take her own foundation to the makeup artist? When I did my e-pics, she just used what she had...she ended up using a lot of powder since it was like 100 degrees outside, but I was hoping for more of a flawless finish (my skin is not that great, so I need a lot of coverage to even things out).
I wear mineral powder foundation on a regular basis and I can attest to the fact that it doesn't photograph well AT ALL. Even when my skin looks perfect in person, whenever I'm photographed in that makeup my skin looks almost greasy (I guess it would sound more lovely and lady-like if I said "dewey" instead lol). I am doing my own makeup for my wedding and have done several trials and I take photos of myself afterwards... I always love my eye makeup but hate the way my skin looks (and it usually looks FLAWLESS in the mirror, so I'm angry it looks so different on film). I don't suggest mineral powder foundation unless you're a fan of the shiny skin look.
A cheaper alternative to MUF HD foundation, works *almost* as good, but a fraction of the price!

I have slightly oily skin with a really uneven skin tone (and lately breaking out like crazy!). This is what I use right now and it gives me a super flawless finish:
Primer: Monistat Chaffing Gel (same as Smashbox primer at 1/4 the price!)

Foundation: Smashbox High Definition Healthy FX

Powder: Sephora "Tricks of the Trade" Mineral Matte Setting Powder

I LOVE Bare Minerals for everyday, but I used Makeup Forever HD foundation for my wedding and it was AMAZING!!!!! My wedding was on the beach and I never powdered my face the whole time....
@ktbrady -- i think you can buy it yourself and simply ask your make up artist to use it. the girl who did my make up was actually from the MAC store, but had no problems with using the foundation i gave her. oh and get yourself some Clean & Clear blotting tissues too! Reapplying layer after layer of powder can get kinda cake-y so those definitely do the trick
Thanks girls! Sounds like I'll be making a trip to Sephora after work tomorrow!
Based on this thread I made a trip to Sephora this evening and picked up some Makeup Forever HD foundation. I never would have known what photographed well. Thanks.
I would love to get that stuff too but I don't have a Sephora near me. Anyone have a foundation suggestion that can be purchased at ulta or even a drug store or makeup counter?
I'm a hairstylist and a makeup artist, a current trend I'm seeing is that most of the women LOVE their eye makeup, but hate the rest of the face. Well, you guys know you can just get the eyes done by your makeup artist right? I don't get offended at all, and I rather just do the eyes if they're not comfortable with the rest of the face. I mean, there's only so much we can do...we're no magicians! I hope you keep that in mind...so that way you can still have your beautiful eye makeup...and get it done cheaper than having a full face done! At least, that's what I do if someone just wants their eyes done. But do note that MINERAL makeup is NOT MEANT for photography! It doesn't hold up well, and you'll either be too dark, too light or blotchy looking. Try it on your face, and take pictures with SEVERAL lighting options and different settings...see how it holds up well in all of the pictures. Because with wedding photography, you're not on a 'set'...you're outside, inside, in the light or in the dark...so...be wise if you're gonna go bare minerals! PS. LAURA MERCIER (LOVE, LOVE IT! COVERAGE IS GREAT!), MAKEUP FOREVER HD and SMASHBOX HD are the BEST foundations for wedding...and try not to use foundations with SPF...the spf will reflect light, causing a whitish cast. GOOD LUCK!
Studio Tech by MAC. Recommended for brides - looks great all day and for photos.
Era classified looks great for long wearing foundation when you need extra coverage. Makeup Forever HD i like but not for extra coverage.
@stylistSU: After years of being a makeup artist. The rule stands true. There are no rules to makeup, only rules of thumb. Nothing called "too anything".I disagree with telling anyone how to wear their foundation/blush/powder/eyeliner/eyeshadow. Makeup is subjective. Everyone has their own makeup style. Many light people tend to go light/lighter or mix it with a luminzer to make themselves brighter/radiant/porcelin like. A great example of this would be dita von teese, who even stays out the sun to maintain her light skintone and wears light foundation. Others prefer to be dark/darker and darken in the sun or use bronzer all over their skintone. Different people have different preferences. If I spelled "Horse" "Howrse" than there is no "ifs" "and" or "buts" because grammar isnt subjective. What is wrong is wrong! However. Makeup is subjective. I hate nude lips. Does that mean its right to say "dont wear nude lips" ? No.
I might not like it but someone else might. There is no rule to makeup. Thats the beauty of being a makeup artist. There are soo many different styles.
I hate bronzer. But maybe there is someone who loves that deep bronzed look. I cant go to them and say "dont go soo deep in the bronzer" and say its "constructive". There are soo many different styles.who is anyone to tell someone theyre wearing a too light or too dark foundation, because there is no such thing. Nicole and Sam from pixiwoo(huge makeupartists in Britain) sometimes wear paler or darker foundation and it looks gorgeous! as long as people blend it to the neck its fine....some people prefer to look bright and radiant.
If they like to look darker,etc..thats their wedding day and their preference.

So, I haven't yet booked my make up trial & appointment because I am clueless on what to do!
There aren't that many great salons in the area that I'll be and the better ones either use Aveda or Bare Minerals makeup. I'm worried that it won't last through the day or won't photograph well.
I've been trying to sort through the pro's/con's of traditional makeup, HD makeup, & airbrushing - and my head is SPINNING!
Do you girls have any suggestions on what would last all day & look great?
Thanks!
