For the most bang for your buck you might try cruising the carribean. I recommend Royal Carribean. Be forewarned that hurricane season is May to November (so travel insurance may be a good thing).
If you prefer to travel during the summer months I would try Hawaii, which is currently a great deal for US travelers (as it is the same monetary value). Another option that is often overlooked is Puerto Rico, an international feel right here in our homeland (but again hurricane season :( )
For overseas there are places such as New Zealand, Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, etc. These trips can be costly and often come with a very long flight!
Good Luck!
I would say take a cruise to Alaska. That was our back up if plane tickets to germany were too expensive.
Our budget was slightly higher, but we're going for two weeks to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, staying at the Majestic Elegance. We looked EVERYWHERE for somewhere we could go for two weeks on our budget, and this was it! (We also looked at Mexico.)
We spent a little over 3000 (airfare included) and spent three weeks in Laos and Vietnam. You could definitely do it for less (or more) depending on how you like to travel, and how much airfare would be. South Vietnam would be wonderful if you're looking for beaches.
I would say go in the spring time and go to an all inclusive resort in the Carribean (or near the Carribean) - if you book through travelocity I bet you could get a deal for around 3K including hotel, food and airfare. Last year, my FI and I went to Aruba for alittle under 4K in the beginning of May and stayed at a "four star" resort. We booked through traveloicty - very easy, very cheap.
Hi! I'm a teacher too, so I understand your travel constraints. We are getting married this summer, and taking our vacation to Mexico this summer as well. We also went to another part of Mexico two summers ago, and we loved it, thus why we are going back to Mexico for our honeymoon (different location this time). It was hot, but by a pool and the beach we never noticed it, and it didn't seem as busy! I hope this helps. Good luck!
Another teacher here! :)
Two years in a row, I went to the beach at Thanksgiving. I loved it. It's considered "shoulder season," so no hurricanes, and no crazy Christmas prices!
Last year the FI and I went to San Juan, Puerto Rico, and we LOVED it. It's beautiful there, and no customs issues to deal with. It was the perfect time of year to go. Wonderful weather. Reasonably cheap--a trip for 2 for 7 days was around $1700. We rented an apartment there and saved quite a bit; hotels in SJ are very overpriced. PM me for a recommendation.
Hey Jenny! I know it's not the typical idea of "tropical", but we ended up booking 10 days in Athens and Santorini for $3,000 (including airfare, hotels, and ferries). I've heard Santorini has AMAZING black sand beaches and beautiful greenery. Also, winter and early spring is off season in Greece, so everything is a lot cheaper! Hope this helps!
We are going to Punta Cana, DR for 7 nights all-inclusive (under 3k!). The resorts are very affordable if you can find a good flight! Look into Apple Vacations!
Ok, first of all, definitely try BESTFARES.COM. Look for the vacation packages.
You can easily find honeymoons for under 3K there. Secondly, a trick my fiance and I found was that the room rate you pay for is for two people already (most of the time, so check on that) so you book one vacation package, and then one single ticket for the same flight! We're working on something right now...
We did playa just last year for our engagement and it was beautiful!
PM me if you have any questions.
Bali is a bit pricey for airfare but it's dirt cheap once you get there! If you look for good deals, you should be able to do it for about $3k.

I am a teacher, and seeing as we will be getting married in September of 2010, we won't be taking a honeymoon right away because I can't take off that much work during the school year.
If we could go during Spring Break, Summer, Thanksgiving time, or Christmas time, what would be the best time of year to go? We want to go somewhere tropical. We are open to any suggestions...we are clueless! :)
