When I lived in Residence, I got a job at the front desk of the Rez, hours were good and I didn't have to go too far.
Once I moved off campus, clothing store (awesome discounts on clothes....awesome when a student)
But the BEST. Serving (at a popular chain restaurant)....can't beat the tips!
I was a server at a steakhouse. It was nice because I had a set schedule, could pick up shifts if needed, and I made pretty good money (since the price of steak is high so were my tips). Plus if I needed the night off for any reason, we were allowed to have other people work our shift, so we would trade shifts or pay someone $20 to take our shift.
I had the best job. I was an usher for uni functions meaning I counted people and handed out programs, and worked my way up to manager meaning I got to push play for movies, so I got payed to watch movies and plays and stuff. I even had the theater key, and still have it since I never gave it back. :P
I was a note taker. I got paid to go to my normal classes and take notes for students with disabilities. I love that job. It required absolutely no extra effort from me besides just going to my regular classes. And as a result I paid more attention and got better grades in those classes, (oh and I actually went!)
I had a lot of fun as a hostess at a brewery/restaurant. I liked it because I made more than minimum wage (not much, but still) and had a good idea of what my paycheck would be, as opposed to serving where you rely mainly on tips. It was fun because I worked with a lot of other people my age and we goofed off a lot.
I had two. Sunglass Hut. SO freaking easy. I worked part time but made the same amount I made at my first "real" job after college. I also worked at a Naval Museum on an old air craft carrier. It was really cool and it had great benefits like being able to tour anything in Charleston for free :)
I 'bartended' at a great, small restaurant. I quote bartender, because it was just beer and wine - no cocktails. It was really fast paced, really fun, and you meet a ton of nice people.
I loved having the tips for extra money, and made hourly on top of the tips.
Plus, I learned a lot about gourmet food!
Computer lab monitor. You never have to do anything but just sit there and once in a blue moon help someone else with an issue. The rest of the time, you're paid to study and do your own school work.
I ran an outdoor flower cart. Studying out doors and getting paid for it rocked!:)
I worked at Steinmart, which was awesome because we got a 25% discount. I was able to afford really cheap suits and professional clothes. It was pretty awesome :).
I was a secretary in the afternoons. :) Amazing because my boss knew me well, so it wasn't awkward when I had to ask off or anything. I also made more than minimum wage because it was a private company.
I also worked retail and HATED IT. They do not work with you, they just work you.
I was an "SI" Instructor (Supplimental Instruction)
I sat in a class I had already taken, with the instructor I had already taken it with, took the same notes, read the same readings, and had 3 1hr "sessions" a week, with students that wanted more study with someone that already knew what the instructor expected, 3 office hrs, and got paid for the class time.
It was great! I got to make my own schedule for sessions, office hours, and picked the block hour of that class that worked around my other classes.
It WAS GREAT!
I worked the front desk at day spa. It was awesome! Tons of free treatments and it was very relaxing.
I worked at the rec center at one college I went to. I was a resident assistant as well. Then I worked in medical billing. That was a kick ass job.
I was a part-time office assistant at my school's MBA program office. I scheduled meetings, helped with events, answered the phone, etc - basically your normal assistant duties. It was pretty low key, and I liked that I never had to work nights or weekends (office always closed at 5pm on the dot!). And it was great getting experience working in an office environment before I graduated.
I highly suggest getting a job that is at least somewhat related to the field you want to get into when you graduate if you can. It looks fantastic if you can show that you already have relevant work experience by the time you graduate.
I worked at my school's writing center and it was the most amazing job ever. I was able to work one on one with with students who brought in writing assignment for their classes. It was very low key and rewarding with great hours and flexibility. By the time I graduated I was working in the open lab and also leading small group tutorials for ESL and English 101 students. So much fun!
My brother and sister graduated in the sciences and they were able to work in the same lab. They started out as dishwashers but were able to move up to doing real research by the time they graduated.
Nannying for a rich family. The kids were older so I basically would just do my homework and eat their food while making sure they didn't kill each other.
Nannying for a rich family in the summer for sure.
During the school year, it was being a Residence Advisor. Covered my rooming costs.
I say nannying!!! My sister is doing it while in college and its awesome!
govt intern. i set my schedule up at the beginning for the minimum i could do (and then when i was available, i worked extra), used it as a basis for school projects, made more than at previous jobs, was allowed to do homework at work a lot of the times, and supervisors were fighting to hire me at the end of it :]
Oh... I also worked in the hospital lab as a "vampire" since they're open 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week they were able to work around the schedule I needed... 1 day off during the week & Sundays off for church.. had my classes and 40 hrs! =)
I've had a lot of good ones -
Research assistant for professors - usually pays pretty well and good for your resume/when you're looking for full-time job.
Tutoring - this was my favorite. I got paid a LOT, and I love working with people, so it was really fun. Very rewarding to see people improve after you've worked with them!
Teaching Assistant - office hours once a week, grade tests, etc.
My brother and his gf worked as computer lab monitors and loved it - get paid for sitting there and doing your work (or going online)
Waiting tables/bartending. You have cash in your pocket every time you work and can make fantastic money depending on where you are working.
I was a tour guide at my college. Wage was decent and you couldn't beat the location.
I worked a few jobs, and the best by far was working in a photo developing lab. Some days when work is really frustrating I find myself fantasizing about working there again, lol
My favorite job was lifeguarding and teaching swimming lessons. I did it all through high school and college.
I worked at a call centre; being on the phones was awful, but I was promoted to a couple of different data entry type positions during my time there, and those were great. Low stress, ok pay, I could chat with my co-workers a lot. Data entry can be a bit boring, but is wonderful with good co-workers!
I worked as a CNA at a nursing home. I made 10+ an hour, got benefits, and worked as much as I wanted. Plus, it is steady work!
Oooh, tough call. Especially since I often worked 2-3 jobs at a time! However, the nanny gig with gave me a free place to live, and I am still good friends with the family today. Since the child was older, I just had to make sure he woke up, went through his morning routine, and drove him to school.
I also was a receptionist at a CPA firm--to this day, I still get a discount on my taxes with them! I had great hours, but they were nice about flexibility on the rare occasion that I needed extra time off. Most of the time I was able to study or write papers, since I worked there in the "off-season."
Oh, I should at that at the rec center I was a lifeguard and swim instructor.
Oooh I also vote for nannying! I'm a nanny, and make loads of quick cash (no taxes!) for just hanging and doing homework, and playing :)
Sittercity.com is an awesome website to find local baby- or pet-sitting jobs. They even have listings for housecleaning or house-sitting. It's awesome.
I worked at a spa inside of a gym. (It's actually where I met my fiance!)
I got my hair, makeup, nails and massages, facials, and waxing all done for free! Huuuuge perk.
I actually really enjoyed TA-ing, but I'm kind of a nerd.
A girl who I knew worked reception at a plastic surgeon's office. Every year instead of an annual bonus, they were allowed to have one cosmetic surgery and only had to pay for the "parts" (so like, paying for the silicon implants but not the doctor's bills). She loved it and worked there for at least 4 years. And yes, she had an elective surgery every year.
I was a nanny. I lived near school during the summer and was a nanny all summer long. Then during the school year I was either an after school nanny or a babysitter on weekends. I loved making straight cash and I love kids so it was perfect.
I worked in the Student Accounts office during the year for work-study and honestly had the best time. The people that actually worked in there all became like another mom to me so I had about 7 moms during my entire time in college. I was able to come and go as I wanted with work but when my hours ran out, I couldn't work anymore :(
I worked for an upscale nanny agency. Awesome money!
Then I worked at Victoria's Secret (which I still do) it's a pretty decent job. Easy, good discount, free stuff.
I was a Resident Assistant, and the next year got to be a step up and basically be an assistant Resident Director. It was fantastic! I loved working with the other RAs in my building and we had a great time!
I also worked in a writing center in the library and tutored other college students in writing. It was decent money, but the best part was if no one came in I got to sit and do homework while getting paid.

What was the best job you had while you were in college? I need a new one!
