I thought I’d tap into the pool of ring afficionados to find the best place to purchase a large emerald or sapphire RHR. It’ll be for a significant birthday (for myself ) and while I’d always thought of getting a sapphire, seeing some of the beautiful emeralds here has sparked my interest. I’m completely fine with having a lab-created stone – especially if it means i’ll get much better clarity for a better price. However, I’d like it to be on the verge of garishly/cocktail-ring large (I have tiny size 4 fingers, so it probably won’t take much for it too look just on the right side of ridiculous). It definitely won’t be an every day ring
Any advice or tips on where to start looking? Reputable online sources would be especially excellent!

MRSsrm85: Thanks for the link! Unfortuantely I’m not in the US and from experience both online and in country, there’s a much better selection in your locals than where I am at the moment :(. I’m particularly interested in lab-created stones though, as so far I haven’t really been that satisfied witht the natural ones i’ve come across esp with clarity.

Pixel8: If your looking for sterling silver, check out shantastic jewelry on Etsy
Also, moissaniteco is now carrying nice looking lab gems. http://www.moissaniteco.com/cultured_gemstones.html
Schubacs also sells lab created gemstones, their emeralds look amazing! http://youtu.be/2W-CadTQ850
Lord of gem rings on eBay and Etsy has some nice pieces,http://stores.ebay.ca/Lord-of-Gem-Rings/Emerald-/_i.html?_fsub=8924032&_sid=50922125&_trksid=p4634.c0.m322
Chris cz has some nice stones at lower price points, you could find a nice setting on ebay and have a lovely piece for not too much $.http://www.diamondcz.co.uk/gem.php5?level=3&expand=Round&first=Created@Emerald&second=Round
I have an emerald from him and it’s lovely, I would have preferred a more included stone, but it is very beautiful.
Here is my ring

GoldfishPie: Around the $1000 mark (for the stone) hence why being ok with a lab-created stone :). I’m still not sure about the setitng, as it will depend on the colour and shape of the stone itself. <br /><br />
mrsmay07: Thanks for all the links! I’ll check them out. I’d prefer not silver, just because it’s more likely to tarnish with infrequent wearing. I had stumbled across moissanite co and would love to hear what others have experienced with their coloured gemstones.

$1000 for the emerald is more than enough for a nice quality natural emerald. I have bought from Embassy Emeralds before, and they are really professional wtih outstanding emeralds. Check them out: http://www.embassyemeralds.com/index.php
Once you find your center stone, you could look on Etsy or other places for a setting, then have a ring made with the perfect stone and perfect setting. Pricescope has an active gemstone forum, although they don’t talk about lab created or synthetic stones. They do have good lists of stone and setting retailers though, and lots of other good resources.
Go all the way to the bottom of this thread, so you can see the most recent listings.

Pixel8: I am buying on etsy and will get a lab sapphire because they are identical in every way to natural sapphires, except they were not mined from the earth.
Did you get a stone yet? I might consider this Moissannite Co if you had a good experience.

I’d go to pricescope.com and talk to the people in the colored stones forums. They helped me a TON in buying my sapphire ring. Without them I would have probably ended with a gemstone with a window (nooooooo) or way over paying. They love hunting down nice stones/rings.
