I am plus sized and so is one of my BM. My girls got grey dresses as well from Alfred Angelo. They have a great selection and all their dresses come in any of their 40 colors and in any size up to a 32 AT NO EXTRA CHARGE! I was happy with my BM dress from 2 years ago and my wedding dress and my BM is THRILLED with her dress (corsset back making her look really slim).
Are you wanting BM looking dresses in the cocktail length or just any dress that is a cocktail dress? Does that make sense?
Any dress in cocktail style is fine by me. I'm pretty open to whatever they want to wear.
Hi, I am a plus-size gal so I hope I can help.
One of my favorite sites for nice stuff (when budget isn't first consideration) is kiyonna.com, but I looked through their dresses, and I don't see any gray ones. Another fancy online plus boutique is igigi.com (check out this dress, not gray per se, but it might read that way)
Other places I've shopped for cocktail dresses: avenue.com (kind of cheap-y quality, but decent), lanebryant.com, Macy's usally has some plus cocktail dresses at least online, ditto JCPenney and I found in general most typical bridesmaid dresses (like at David's, Alfred Angelo, or any bridal store) go to usually a size 28 or so. I personally felt like Alfred Angelo was a very easy place to look at both plus wedding dresses and plus bridesmaid dresses--they had a good selection of samples in a variety of sizes.
Here's a gray dress I saw at avenue.com
Not sure if it would go with your style, and if your friend is self-concious about flabby skin, specifically in the arm region, I have found most sleeveless dresses look really great with a shrug/bolero or wrap (because you couldn't pay me enough to let my chubby arm waddle be seen!).
I was trying to look on lanebryant.com, but their site is being weird for me. They are getting to have more and more cocktail dress type clothing, so thats worth checking.
I was a bridesmaid for my cousin two years ago, and it was tricky to find something, but I really appreciate her being really understanding and helpful in finding something that worked for me, so kudos to you for being sensitive on that front.
I hope that helped. I was actually buying a cocktail dress at this time two years ago to attend someones wedding, and it was a major PITA to find what I wanted (and involved a lot of mail order on my part), but it gave me a list of go-to dress sources, so I hope they help!
Depends on what type of fabric.. Lane Bryant, Torrid (torrid.com), Dillards, and Macys all have a slew of dresses in plus-size/ womans sizes if your trying to keep the cost down.
I love the website http://www.kiyonna.com They have some great stuff :) But I don't know if they have gray colored dresses, but it's worth a look. If anything, this might be a fun website you gal can shop from. There is an adorable dress on there I would have worn for my wedding, but it only came in black. :(
I'm not sure about grey, but I have had a lot of success with Avenue lately. They have a tab to another site on their site... it's a brand called "Jessica London" I think. Macy's has been cute too.
@curlysue - Thank you for that awesome site! I have never heard of it before!
No problem ladies :) Glad I could help. I hope to order a few things from there soon. Their customer service I guess is awesome from the reviews I've read on the site.
I love that they sell great looking stuff and has a pop of sexiness to some of it. I hate how when I try to find clothes for my size it's very hard. Just because I'm a curvy woman doesn't mean I want to dress like my grandmother.
Hi
I got my MOB gown ordered with only 2 months before my daughter's wedding, and I was very impressed with the gown as it was very well made. I didn't want the usual MOB tent dress with a cape. Just because I AM a grandmother doesn't mean I want to wear something MY grandmother would wear! lol! I found a gorgeous gown at www.keepmeinstitches.biz, they also have a "brick and mortar" bridal shoppe called Rowan's Bridal or something like that. (Not in my state, though). They have Wedding gowns, bridesmaids dresses fg dresses and accessories too. If you can order farther out than 2 months it's better, but I did get my gown in no time! Their customer service was extremely helpful! Best Wishes, Rhonda
Yep, Alfred Angelo is where we're getting all the BM's dresses...they were $200 each, but atleast they go from like a 0-32! and they're really pretty!
I'd also like to throw in a word for Kiyonna, they may not have grey now, but they have in the past.
Another good one is Jibri's etsy store, http://www.etsy.com/shop/jibrionline
and...gotta throw a word in for lsmfashions - if you look at their site, they do carry some plus sized things (despite their etsy saying they only carry 0-10, that's just all they stock) and they're actually making my wedding dress (I'm a 14) so if you've got a bit of money, Lea's super reasonable in price and extremely sweet. I know she's made cocktail and prom dresses before. http://www.etsy.com/shop/lsmfashions
I think someone already mentioned this, but Lane Bryant tends to have a good selection for anyone above a 16W, I have trouble fitting their stuff.
Or...I can't find a link, but those convertible bridesmaid/cocktail dresses are SO flattering, for so many body types, and come in any color imaginable. The ones that can be worn with or without sleeves, grecian, criss-crossed, one-shouldered, strapless, and a few other ways.
the very best place for plus size gowns and cocktail dresses.. Sydney's Closet!
I know this is a long-shot (Fashion Bug sold this dress but it's no longer on their site), but if you can find this dress someplace out there in cyberspace, BUY IT! I bought this dress offline (something I NEVER do-- especially buying dresses) and fell in love with it the minute I put it on, the minute it came in the mail, LOL.

I am 5'0", wear a size 20/22 and am more "apple" shaped with larger shoulders, arms (ugh) and large tummy area and with slender legs and no butt. Not a whole lot flatters me, but this did wonderfully. The dress was a boatneck with ruched top, banded empire waist and a below-the-knee flowing skirt. Really very pretty and very feminine. Provided coverage AND camouflage-- always good things :)
And PS, obvs if you can't find it, find something like it. I highly reccomend it.

So, my MOH is the BEST. I want her to feel absolutely awesome at my wedding, so among the things I am doing is letting her pick any dress she wants, as long as it is grey, in the cocktail-evening range (nothing really fancy), and not super glittery or shiny. She had gastric bypass a few years back and is still overweight, but totally on the right track. She has not had skin surgery yet.
My question for any bride who has shopped for plus sized gowns is, who sells good cocktail and evening gowns? I'm not positive what her size is, but I am putting together an email for my BMs, and most dresses come in S, M, or L, or only go up to 12. WTH? It isn't as if I feel a need to pick out a dress for her, but I want to at least include some links to dresses she can wear in my email.
Any help would be awesome. I am so lucky to have my BM, and I want only the best. Luckily, she has a lot of flexibility on price (the only one of my BMs who does).
