I have two:
Mine - My husband and I were going down to Georgia for labor day weekend and he thought my mom would have fun so he paid for her to fly down too. We got to the lake and he said that there was a gala at the Ritz that we were going to. He had brought a dress and had it hanging in the closet for me and told me to get ready. I put on the dress and got ready and we went out on the boat because it is faster to get to the Ritz by boat than by car. Once we were in the boat he put on some Jack Johnson and we were going slowly on the water out of the cove. It was a full moon that night and the entire lake was very light. He popped some champagne and handed me a rose. He was SO quiet (which is unusual) and after a few minutes of just drinking together and enjoying the moment...4th of July sized fireworks started going off above us!!! He got down on one knee right as the fireworks started going off and asked me to marry him. Then we took the boat back to his parents dock where my mom and his whole family was waiting for us with champagne and a cake!
ANother - our friends just got engaged last weekend. He told her they were going to take pictures for a Christmas Card at the Lincoln Memorial where they had their first kiss. They first had a picnic and then he told her it would be nice to walk to the top of the Lincoln Memorial to enjoy the view. Once they go to the top he started telling her why he loves her, etc. Then gets down on one knee and pops the question. Of course she says yes. Right after he tells her to look to her left and says "see the woman taking pictures - that is our photographer" he had hired a photographer to capture the whole thing!!! Then they drove to a bar where her friend was to show her friend the ring...little did she know that ALL her friends were there and his parents flew up from Georgia and her parents flew up from Florida and we all yelled surprise when they walked in!!! It was the cutest thing ever!
I think I am in the it is special to me but not to other people catagory.
Ours is we went to Spaghetti Factory for dinner with my family and I was really bored and was making rings from the straw rappers. This is something I used to do in high school all the time and made one for my now FI and was joking around about it then the food came and I was consumed with that. So after dinner we walk back to the car and when we get in he looks over at me and hands me back the straw rapper ring which shocked me. He then said that he had wanted to wait for my birthday (a month later) but could not. So for a day I had a straw rapper e-ring!
I think my proposal story was pretty awesome (to me of course!)...
While we were dating, then BF and I used to cook for each other. We would alternate, and we would always write down our recipes and take pictures of the food and the chef of the night. It was just a fun thing we did. One night, last June, then BF came home suspiciously early and said he wanted to cook dinner. He refused to tell me what he was making though. He wanted to sit down and eat right away, but I wasn't hungry so I made him take a walk with me (he said it was the longest walk of his life!). When we got back, he made dinner and we sat down. He put my plate down in front of me and I realized it was the very first meal he'd every cooked for me (balsamic chicken with sauteed peppers, yum!). He then brough out a wrapped package. When I opened it, it was a photo book of all our recipes that we had ever made, with our pictures from cooking and pictures from throughout our relationship. I was pretty dumbfounded at this point and had no idea why he had gone to the trouble to do that. He told me to turn to the last page and it said "Recipe for the best couple: 1 hilary, 1 alex, 1 cup of humor, 1 tablespoon of honesty" etc etc and then on the bottom it said "will you marry me" and I looked up and saw him on one knee
He gave me a lovely little speech about how much he loved me and how he wanted to be with me for the rest of his life. I freaked out of course and couldn't stop saying "Is this for real? Are you kidding?!" for like 10 minutes before I finally said yes.
And I didn't realize until later that the photo book he made had Hilary and Alex Lastname written on it :)
My FI's proposal didn't seem very elaborate to the onlookers, but he put a LOT of time into planning it.
We went on a cruise with a friend of his who's a country singer. There was a group of 40 or 50 people who were all there to see the private concerts, etc. that he put on. FI invited my mom and aunt to come along, and I thought it was just to have a fun vacation (His family couldn't afford to go) and made sure he added international calling to his cell phone plan before we left, which I thought was strange. I noticed in the months leading up to the cruise that he was on the phone with our country singer friend a LOT, and I even got kind of annoyed. He would nearly break into tears when I would complain about wanting to be engaged. I feel bad now for all the torture I put him through. :)
Anyway, we go on the cruise, and our friend had a concert on the beach in Progresso, Mexico and he played a few songs and we were just hanging out enjoying the concert when he stands up and says he'd like to invite his buddy from our hometown up for a minute. I look at FI and he stands up and walks to the "stage" area and tells me to come up as well. My exact words to my mother as I stood up were "I'm gunna kill him!" Haha, I don't do crowds and figured he'd volunteered us for some kind of game. But the next thing I knew he was on one knee with the ring I'd been trying to find in his suitcase the whole time! Haha It was amazing! EVERYONE was taking pictures and there was a video (I can't wait to get that!) because our friend was shooting a music video. FI had arranged for his videographer to shoot the proposal as well!
And I was so glad to have the international calling to be able to tell everyone at home!
May not seem like such a big deal to others, but it was perfect for me! :)
i don't know if i'd necessarily call my proposal epic, but it was pretty awesome, and perfect for me. he made a scavenger hunt for me all over the city, visiting important places to us. the first clue had an ipod with a soundtrack for my adventure with non-cheesy love songs. all the clues had scrabble letters with them (i am a huge word nerd and love crossword puzzles, scrabble, anagrams, etc), and cab fare to the next destination. he had it timed out perfectly that i would end up on the brooklyn promenade (it overlooks the manhattan skyline) at sunset. there was a scrabble board and roses on a bench on the promenade, and a whole lot of interested bystanders watching. the last clue said to put the missing pieces in the scrabble board (spelling out ___ will you marry me) and when i had finished he was all of the sudden there on one knee.
the funny thing is, FI is the last person i would ever expect to put something like that together. he never plans anything, i do enough planning for the both of us usually. he did inform me over dinner that night that he has now bought himself years of not having to plan anything again :)
@PitBulLover: The whole lake/fireworks thing=AWESOME
@hilsy85: I've never heard of a recipe proposal before, that's so cute! And a lot of planning!
@pb and j: I always like hearing stories about "clues" just because it takes a lot of creativity and makes it so personal. That's a cute story!!

Upon reflection, my DH's proposal was special to me, but not a very epic story. There was no plan, no thought behind it, it just kinda happened. And that's pretty much the case for every couple that I know. With one exception. Imagine how totally awesome it would be to be proposed to from the summit of Kilimanjaro!
I was checking out my friend's proposal video and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I mean, I've seen the youtube videos of these elaborate proposals, but I've never known the person who pulled one off.
Do any of you ladies have any amazing proposal stories (your own or people you actually know) to share?
