@ribbons: you should check out www.makemeheal.com they're a cosmetic/plastic surgery site but the sell products as well.. theres probably at leas 10 pages of products that reduce scars as well as reviews from users so you get actual reviews whether or not they work... I know the silicon sheets works thats what plastic surgeons always recommend but I'm sorry I don't know any brands off hand. Also you want to keep that scar out of the sun until its fully healed OR it WILL NOT heal properly. Vitamin E works well too.. like Bio-Oil
Oh thanks for the site recommendation! Haven't been able to find a lot of reviews together.
From my experience, the silicone sheets work well. I had a nasty scar and they helped alot with flattening the scar and fading it. I don't remember the brand but I would think they all are similar. I also use Bio Oil. You can get both of these things at the drug store, Target, Walmart, etc. Creams like Mederma didn't work at all.
Vitamin E oil. I swear by it. I was in a bad accident 15 years ago and found that using Vitamin E to keep the scar wet helped a lot.
@ribbons: I fel your pain....really, I do.
I had a car accident 10 years ago that resulted in the same scar from that procedure and a total splemetomy (sp?), plus bi-lateral chest tubes that left 2-3 inch scars on both sides of my chest, and severe facial lacerations. I used a silicone gel/cream that I got from my plastic surgeon. All I recall now is that it was expensive, but worked well. It helped my scar fad a bit, and become more flat.
BUT, your scar will not disappear. I wanted that for the longest time :( but it is here to stay with the others. My scars blend well with the rest of my skin color, some people don't notice them on my face. Your tummy scar is in a great spot though....It gives you the illusion of well defined abs! LOL! At least that's what I say to people. Just let it heal completely, use vitamin E oil too. And when you go out in the sun or tanning bed, use diaper rash cream to cover it (yes, really). Otherwise, it will be discolored.
Hope that helps. If you have any other questions or you wanna chat, let me know :) It doesn't stay ugly and red forever...but it will always remind you of the second chance you have been given :)
I scar very easily so there isn't much that will completely get RID of scars on me, but I've had great luck with Mederma, mostly on my face for acne scars. I have so many other scars that I don't bother making them fade (they won't), but I would give mederma a shot, but it does take a long time!

I was in a serious car accident last month that required a laparotomy. The scar from the surgery is quite huge -- about six inches long from my bikini area and then up past my belly button. I've had a laparoscopy before, so I am used to having some scars on my stomach, but those are quite small and faded quickly. This scar is red, a little raised, and just so obvious. I had a lot of other injuries in the accident but this is the one that upsets me because of its visibility (as vain as that is).
The nurses at the hospital recommended silicone sheets. Has anyone tried these and if so which brand? Or has anyone had luck with just the creams like mederma?
