Stiletto blogged awhile back about some ribbon sellers on Etsy. Check it out!
I've purchased from reasonableribbon.com a few times. Great service and it gets to me pretty quickly.
I got a bunch of ribbon at papermart.com
I drop their name when I can since I had a bridezilla moment
with them when something was the wrong color and they refunded my money to me including shipping and let me keep the item instead of having to ship it back to them. That's love right there.
I'm a big fan of the $.50 spools of colored ribbon from Michael's for little projects. I keep several spools on hand at all times!
I bought ribbon at jkmribbon.com. I would advise against that site, if possible. The shipments took forever to come, and rather than notifying me that one of my colors on backordered, they just didn't send it, and then when I called to ask why part of my order was missing, THEN they decided to tell me. They said that the color would ship out in two weeks. It took two months. Good thing I planned ahead and ordered all our ribbon months ahead of schedule, so it wasn't a huge deal. But yuck, bad customer service.
I don't know what type of stores are in San Diego, but you could check out any big scrapbook stores. I worked at one and we carried a huge selection of specialty ribbon. Only problem is, if you need a lot it can be hard to get. That's why stores like Michaels and Joanns are good for bulk basic ribbon. There's also a store called Fabric Barn up in Orange County that is great if you are ever up this way!
I used papermart.com for the ribbon we used in the wedding. Their ribbon is a good quality and I got about 85 times more ribbon than I'll ever need in my whole life for less money than 1 tiny roll at Michael's.
I purchased some from http://www.wholesaleribboncarnival.com/ for favors and programs. They were easy to work with and the prices were the best that I could find for the quantity that I needed (200 yards). They also have a site with lower quantities: http://www.theribboncarnival.com/
I don't know what kind of ribbon you're looking for, but Tinsel Trading has some neat vintage ribbons as well as vintage millinery supplies.
Miss Chapstick- The same thing happened to me with jkmribbon. I still haven't received a couple spools of my ribbon and I'm getting a little nervous that I won't receive them before my wedding. I would also advise against using them.
