    Hi Bees,

I have recently purchased PS CS5.  I am a PS beginner and I know that it is an application that requires some patience and willingness to learn.  I know we have some PS whizzes on the hive, so I wondered if people had any recommendations for books, online tutorials, websites, etc that can help me learn how to use this program.

    Thanks!

I would say that the first thing to think about when tackling PS is that it is a MASSIVE program and it takes years of constant use to really get good at it. I'm a pro graphic designer and I've been working with it for almost 10 years at the pro level, and I STILL learn things about the program all the time!

That said, I would say that the second thing to realize about PS is that there are several ways- several steps- to get the same results. For instance, there are at least 4 ways I can think off the top of my head, to extract part of a picture from a larger one. So, while you are playing with tutorials and lessons, realize that there may be an easier way to do something, or one answer may not be the best answer.

Third, I would say to check out anything by Scott Kelby. In my opinion, he is God of all things PhotoShop.

Lastly, PLAY, PLAY, PLAY! Go through all of the pulldown menus, all of the tools. Just keep trying things. Oh, and the very first thing you should learn is LAYERS. And always save a version of everything you do in LAYERS.

    HAVE FUN!!!

@meno-- thanks for the advice!  I am excited to get started, but I am trying to stay realistic and know that it is going to take a lot of time to figure out how to do anything.  PS is certainly a MASSIVE step up from the crappy photo editing software that came with my digital camera 5 years ago!  :)

I would find a local class or workshop so you will at least know where to start then go from there.

    Have fun!
