I really try not to put anything into my body, period. BUT occasionally when I need an extra boost or if I'm trying to fend off a cold, I use those multi-pack once-a-day vitamins. As far as boosting your metabolism, I've found that eating more snacks (well, CONSTANTLY snacking in my case!) rather than taking pills has helped me the most! Good luck and congrats on your weight loss so far!
@proudpeacock: i really don't feel like it's enough especially with the slight weight gain :( i have been dieting for over a month and i just feel like it's not enough weight (it's driving me crazy lol) I also snack a fair bit (just had almonds and cheezits sort of like a crebre trail mix lol but it was maybe 200 calories or so i know heavy for a snack but i have only eaten maybe 5 or 600 calories today and need to figure out the rest of the food for today before i am not eating enough again lol) i also did about 30 minutes on the elliptical (in the weight loss interval as well as my leg and ankle presses) I can definitely start seeing the definition in my legs but it just feels like i need more (omg i am sounding crazy to myself)
6 or 7 pounds in two weeks is awesome - I'm totally jealous! I've been working out hardcore for about 2 months now, and have lost about 5. But I know I've put on muscle.
As far as supplements go, I take green tea. It's more convenient for me than drinking a few cups a day like I used to, and it's safe for most people. I take 1, 500 mg capsule a day, the NSI brand from Vitacost. Gives me more energy for my workouts and I'm pretty sure it helps rev up my metabolism. It seems to be most effective and just help speed up the process a little when I'm eating healthy and working out already. Helps to find a brand with as little filler as possible too, my husband had a reaction to a formula from Walgreens that was less pure.
Fruits and veggies. :)
Sorry, couldn't resist! Hot and cold liquids will boost your metabolism, and eating the right balance of nutrients in the right proportions at the right times will fuel your metabolism as well. Ditto getting enough sleep.
Anything else won't work nearly as well, and often will have harmful or unwanted side effects.
I used to take Liquid Source of Life- and have been meaning to get back on them. It doesnt taste too bad, and I really feel like it gives me more energy- as for a metabolism boost, it cant hurt!! Good luck!
My GP and my OBGYN both separately suggested taking pre-natal even though I'm not trying to get preggers. They're the best all around chock full of everything you need vitamin and it's not like it adds hormones into your body to help you get pregnant or anything it's just helping you stay healthier which if you were to get pregnant you need to be doing but if you're not then it's fine you just need the vitamin goodness. My GP actually suggested Kirkland (costco brand) but they don't sell the pre-natal at my store so I get the One a Day brand (I think CVS sells their own version of this for about $5 less) which she also suggested. The best part is they make my skin and hair look AWESOME! I also read that a great way to test your vitamins for absorption is to dissolve a tablet in a vinegar and water solution (you can google it - I don't have the exact amounts) if it breaks down in a half an hour than it will break down in your stomach. Some people feel even just water should be enough of a test but I admit I have not tried that yet.
I take a Super B complex, Iron and a Daily Women's Health Vitamin....I don't know that you would need the extra Iron, but I tend to have anemia problems which is why I take the extra Iron and B vitamins.
The B complex is also supposed to support metobolic health and pretty much be overall good for you.
I am not always the best about remembering to take my vitamins, but have been forcing myself to do better this past month because I can tell when I am becoming anemic...I feel a lot better now after getting the nutrients back into my system.
I take Acai in the morning, B12 in the afternoon (I am a veg) and a daily from Trader Joes at night!
@lily: i eat tons of fruits (love grapes and strawberries and oranges) and as far as veggies go i'm a big spinach salad girl or baby fresh (a few cups)... or a veggie sandwich from subway, i just wanted something with more of a kick. I think i'll try the green tea supplement (hot liquid)because as it is i only drink water and sometiems smoothies
I take the beWHOLEsome regimin from GNC. It is a general vitamin but also has a hair and nail formula, fish oil, etc - they come in little packets and I take one packet each day.
They are a bit pricey though. I think when I run out I may just go to the prenatals bc they are cheaper.
okay prenatals sound like they are a go, i should be able to get them from wal-mart though i am thinking...
@crebre...flintstones taste much better...trust me. 2 Flintstones vitamins = 1 prenatal vitamins per my primary care Dr and GYN.
@JamaicaBride true about the taste... I bet if I bought Flintstone's vitamins that FI would eat them all, lol.
I agree with BlueButterfly - a B complex is really the best bet for a number of nutritional and metabolic benefits (esp. if you are vegetarian). B complex fights stress and promotes a regular metabolism.
That being said, eating regular snacks will also keep that metabolism going! I just want to congratulate you on your weight loss thus far. Healthy weight loss is 1-2 lbs per week, so you are doing pretty darn good! The truth is - healthy weight loss takes time (I know, I know, the last thing you want to hear). The good news about it taking time is that while you are working on losing weight, you are developing new, healthy habits that will stick with you for LIFE! Practice makes perfect, and changing your lifestyle isn't an easy thing to do. Good luck Cre, you are awesome!
I take flinstone gummies. They're super yummy and I look forward to taking them everyday!
Whatever you buy, make sure the label says that they follow current GMP (good manufacturing practices). The dietary supplement world can be quite shady. Also a stamp that says USP (United States Pharmacopeia) is another good sign.
I don't know if they're the "best" but I take Viactiv chocolate chewables. Tastes like a tootsie roll and totally guilt free.
b6 is supposed to be good for boosting metabolism... and fibre is excellent too.

So what do y'all think the best vitamin is? I have started a workout regimen (2 weeks ago today!!) I have lost maybe 6 or 7 lbs (gained two last week but I'm pretty sure it's muscle i hope lol!!) I lost about an inch in the bust waist and hips (3 inches total)... i think i need to rev up my metabolism. I was sooo tempted to buy the danged hydroxycut but I know that the weight loss is temporary and I want to be healthy versus having a quick fix so I ask you ladies, what vitamins do you love, what do you hate and why? Is there a safe metabolism booster on the market?
