could you get a book of maps at a bookstore and use those pages (which might be sturdier)?
You could glue them onto cardstock, then cut out your design.
I would definately use an actual map, online image won't have the same paper texture, and may get pixelized. You could also try e-bay or used book stores for maps that have the look you are going for. I also love the idea of using pieces of the map that are important to you. For example, the man/woman one could maps where you are each from, or the hearts could be where he proposed, or a special trip you went on. I love your idea, very cute!
I would definitely go get real maps. As you say CAA members can get free maps.
I would glue them onto cardstock or even foamcore for a bit of dimension.
Do you have a map that you actually used on a special trip together?
I would find someone with a Cricut that has SCaL who can cut out any graphic based font. You can get those man/woman picture fonts free online. Then glue the map to card stock. Put the glued card stock into the Cricut and cut it out.
I don't have anything different to add to the pp's ideas, but I do LOVE this crafty project! I love maps of all kinds and I've never thought to use them this way. :)
Update: I got maps from CAA for free and the lady there was SO gung-ho about my project it was freaking adorable. She gave me TONS of maps to use! I got 4 picture frames from Ikea so we can add to the collection as time goes on with other trips, etc. Unfortunately they're not shadow boxes like the ones in the picture, but again, I can always change it down the road if I find some for a good price. I'm going to get my crafting on tomorrow! Hooray!!
@shedayz: I have a Cricut and SCAL, good idea cutting out the shapes out of card stock first I was thinking about tracing or something, that way is easier and better! The problem with Cricut though is that it's not precise enough. So if I want a certain area on the map centred there's pretty much NO way to make that happen, the margin of error is too great. I'll do a couple of test runs, but I think cutting the boy/girl out, glueing, and then trimming might be my best bet.
@Melini: Our actual maps are locked in our Winnebago 2 hours away. No way to get them :(
@Mrs.ChubbyBunny: I know huh?! I'll take photos tomorrow as I make them. Hopefully it'll come out nicely and I can do a DIY for you all :)
@bakerella: Excited to see how these turn out, I've been seeing them on pinterest (not that I'm addicted or anything) and they look so cute!
@dorsay: Yaaaaaaaaa I'm pretty sure that's where I found them too.... I will definitely take photos to share tomorrow!
OMG, those are freaking cute!!! Bakerella, you always come up with the best ideas and i totally have to steal this one ( i already stole the "cold feet socks", sorry!)! I could use one map of our hometown and one from or wedding destination. Yay, that's perfect :))

Here's my inspiration for a first anniversary present for DH:
I was going to go get maps from CAA (Canadian equivalent of AAA), but now I'm wondering if it's a better idea for me to find good maps online and print them myself on cardstock and cut them? They'd be sturdier, but I'm thinking that the "map" feel might be lost if I print them myself.
Thoughts?
