Only way I can think of that I wouldn’t pronounce like Shakira is Mikyra.

I’d probably spell it “Makyra.” Pretty name, btw =)

I would go with “Makaira”. I’m pretty sure “Kai” is prounced “ky”.

edit: the clearest way to get the pronounciation you want is to spell it with the “y”; I only suggest this way because you said you didn’t want a “y” 🙂

If you don’t want the letter Y in the name, the closest I can think of is “Makaira”, although some people will probably still pronounce that like Shakira.

I also would have said Makyra. Is there a reason why you dont want the letter Y in the name?

happyhealthy87:  I was going to also suggest “Makaira,” but then I thought that some people would probably pronounce it “Ma-kay-ra,” like the ay sound in Kailynn or Kailee.

I definitely think Makaira is the prettier spelling, fwiw.

Kyra is also pronounced like Kira. Mekhi Pfeiffer is the only “eye” name I can think of. Mekhira?

Makaira is the only way to spell it without a Y and have it pronounced correctly (most of the time).

Makaira looks like “muh-KEHR-a” to me. OP, I suspect your daughter will be explaining how to pronounce her (lovely) name her whole life regardless of how you spell it. Heck, I have people pronounce my name “ruh-SHELL” sometimes, and I’m just plain old Rachel.

This is a hard one! Everything I can think of would be pronounced like “shakira”.

af123:  Same here.  Even the suggestions would have me saying it to rhyme with Shakira.  OP you may need to go back to the drawing board.

I’d say to go with the spelling you like if you’re really against the Y, but know that either way she’ll be spelling it or giving pronunciations whenever she meets someone – honestly, I think that just goes along with having a name that isn’t very common.  On initial reading though, I would definitely say Makira like Shakira, and Makaira like “Muck-air-uh”.  So I think Makyra is the closest you’ll get to people getting the right pronunciation on their own.
