Hands down it had to be the speech made by the groom's best man who was his brother. Their relationship has always taken on a more light-hearted spirit and so we were all expecting a comedy act, complete with embarrassing stories. When the best man finished his toast/speech, there wasn't a dry eye in the place.
His toast was sincere and thoughtful. It was emotional and it sounded more like a private conversation between brothers than it was a public speech. I think too what made it great was it didn't have too many inside jokes-you know, the type where only half the guests get it leaving the others scratching their heads.
So yeah, I can only wish that someone will have such a speech just like that for our wedding.
I agree - the best toasts I've heard have always been short and heartfelt, without a bunch of jokes. Conversely, the worst speech I've ever heard dragged on and on, and was filled with a million stories that only the groom could relate to. There's definitely a time and a place for that kind of reminiscing, but for a wedding toast, it's best to keep it short and sweet, and really be sincere about it.
My BFF's dad gave the best toast at her wedding. It was sweet and funny and just exactly what a dad is supposed to say. Not a dry eye in the house.
I think the ones that my father, my b.i.l. (best man + h's brother) and my sister (m.o.h.) gave were the best ones ever. My fathers was from the heart and welcomed both families together and it was so loving, my bil's was a funny true story about how he knew his brother was in love with me and it is kind of a running theme ... the story b/c it not only involved my family but his too, and my sisters was very very funny. She started off funny talking about how we went through 2 wedding planners etc. and how she's excited to have H as her brother.
Im biased but my dads toast was the best because it was my wedding and my dad :) But, my FIL gave a GREAT speech at my SIL & BIL's wedding a month ago. My parents said he should start a business where he is hired to give the toasts at weddings! In one part he said the best advice that he was given along with many others is to never go to bed angry. He said that he and his wife obeyed that rule and never went to bed angry, once they were awake for 3 weeks straight! :)
