I say go with the ECE job.  Your dad will hopefully understand that this job is a stepping stone to what you actually want to be doing and a way to get your name out there in the school system.  I would talk to your dad calmly and explain the situation, how much you appreciate the help he’s given you, etc, but it’s time for you to move into a career more aligned with your passions.

Good luck!

I would say, talk to your Dad.   Don’t let it blind side him.   Have a heart to heart and be above board with it.   He may surprise you.   Tell him your fears, tell him what makes you happy.

I’m in your exact position, but I’m staying safe and here’s why:  I’ve managed to fill my free time with things I love (volunteering for non-profit groups to utilize my education), I’ve maintained contacts in the industry (even seeing people socially keeps you in their minds when a great opportunity arises), and I’ll eventually have enough saved that I can take on the financial risk of pursuing my dream in 3-5 years.  I’ve been with my dad’s company for several years now, and the flexibility/benefits/maternity leave/pay have been so helpful in keeping my stress level down with regards to maintaining my home life.  Yes, my professional life is less fulfilling, but with the security of my job and the happiness I get from volunteering, I stay overall content with the situation.

Just my two cents…

Honestly, I would stay in your current job but I’m a planner and not a risk taker.
