- Wedding: October 2015
So, no, I am not engaged yet, but yes, I am currently in the process of securing brooches for a brooch bouquet. I have been slowly collecting them over the period of a year, but just recently amped up the search process. I’ve scoured Goodwills and yard sales and estate sales in search of any brooch I can find. I like to think of “wedding planning” as my hobby right now, as I am not yet engaged (but just about there). I know having a brooch bouquet is only cost efficient if I spread the money out over time, so that is what I have decided to do.
I am using only gold or bronze metal brooches and have found myself collecting more blush pink or vintagey pieces as opposed to brightly colored gem stones. I recently laid them all out and moved them around to see how they look together and, to my surprise, they look AMAZING! As if I had purchased them all at once or from a set. I am pleasently surprised at how amazing they are going to look…
So much so, that I have been inspired to start collecting for the bridesmaids. This is a secret to all of my future BMs, but I am going to make them each a brooch bouquet as part of their gift. I came to this decision about four months ago, which has caused me to increase my brooch search. So far, I have found fifteen brooches for one of my bridesmaids who loves owls and the Beatles. I have found several pieces that have elements of things from songs, etc.
I realize this is such a massive endeavor, so I have begun collecting them even though I know my wedding is still more than 2 years away. Want to hear the best part!? There is a local (moderatel affluent) neighborhood that has a community yard sale once a month. A woman comes each month and has buckets and buckets and buckets of brooches she sells for only fifty cents each! 😀 Since I have discovered this yard sale, I have gone four months in a row and purchased, on average, fifty brooches each time. I currently have over two hundred that may possibly be for my bouquet (I know I won’t need that many), 15 for another bridesmaid and about eight for another. I have also begun soliciting donations from family members. My grandmother (mom’s mom) gave me twenty and my other grandfather (dad’s dad)’s wife gave me some as well! I figure if I purchase about fifty brooches (about $25) each month up until, say, four or five months before the wedding, this should be a piece of cake 😉
I even had the idea that if I had enough brooches I could incorporate them into the centerpieces on the tables. I realize this is UTTER INSANITY as one of my best friends informed me (and she doesn’t even know I am planning on making them all for the bridesmaids) and my SO usually gives me a look of o_0 when I talk about it or show him how to make a stem.
I just love the idea of not only having my bouquet for years to come (possibly being something that can be handed down), but my bridesmaids can always keep them, I can give away the centerpieces, etc. It just makes me smile to think of it 😀
Overall, I’m incredibly excited and will keep everyone updated as to the process. Now, as a reward for listening to my rambling rant above, here are some photos of some of the brooches I have collected!
I apologize if they are massive…
