That's totally up to you! Birdcage veils can go from classy-romantic to fun-party. They're cool like that. You can choose to take it off for the reception or leave it on and make it work for you!
I agree with Alishaneva, they can pretty much work however you want them to. You could always do it over the face for the ceremony, and then a quick hair adjustment before the reception so that it's not covering your face anymore. They're so beautiful, and I love the assortment of hair combs/clips/feathers/flowers you can wear with them.
It also totally depends on the style you are going for; if you go for a larger one that covers your whole face, you are definitely going to want the groom to flip it over for the kiss! Since you are thinking of going for a smaller one you could definitely choose. I know some people leave theirs on for the reception, but I'll probably take mine off since it obstructs my view a bit. I ended up with a bandeau style (the one with a comb on each side).
Good luck on getting the perfect veil!
I had the same conundrum! Basically, the way I ultimately decided to handle it is to have 2 veils; one birdcage and one 'drop' veil. I will wear the birdcage veil for before ceremony pics, have the regular veil for the ceremony and then switch back to birdcage for reception...
All depends on what works for you, that's the beauty of it!
A regular veil doesn't necessarily HAVE to flipped over.. I'd say it usually isn't at this point. A birdcage that slants across or only partly covers your face probably won't be in the way or need to be moved. Depending though, it can never hurt to practice that kiss with just the veil for a dress rehearsal!
With any veil it's up to you however long you want to wear it. One nice perk of the birdcage is that you usually pair it with a fun hairpiece... so if you get sick of the cage you can usually remove just the cage and still have that fun hairpiece.
You can flip the cage veil back over your head for the kiss if it covers your whole face. An asymmetrical placement. leaving your mouth exposed, might be an easier answer if you like that look. Best wishes!

So I went dress shopping yesterday and tried on a birdcage veil for the very first time. I totally fell in love with it and have now decided that I need one for my wedding day! I have some questions about them so I'm hoping that you all can help me out here!!
How exactly do they work? I know normal veils cover ur whole face and the groom flips them before you kiss (I am not a fan of the traditional veil and that whole thing) With a birdcage veil I think I would want a small one covering half of my face on an angle, or just a one side kinda thing. Do you just wear them when you walk down the aslie and take it off after for the reception, or do you wear it all night??
Thanks in advance!!
