sam-ee: You’re definitely wise investigating it now.

I went on the pill a couple of months before my wedding (we waited). It has the nice bonus that I could time my period to avoid my wedding night.

After a few months on the pill I didn’t like it messing with my hormones, and we switched to condoms, successfully until we tried for kids. Condoms were great because there are no drugs used at all.

I used to use seasonique which I loved because I only had 4 periods a year and no side effects. I later switched to nuvaring which only lasted about 4 months because I had horrible side effects (breaking out all over my face, weight gain of 15 lbs, nausea, irritability). however several people are absolutely fine with it. We just use condoms now. 🙂 easy, no worrying about taking things on time or if its working, and no side effects.

I have been on pretty much everything (multiple pills, the patch, and the ring).  I am currently using the Mirena and I love it.  I have so few side effects on it and I still don’t get my period which is awesome also.  I like that it is set it and forget it and I don’t have to think about BC for 5 years.  I’m 2 years into it now and planning on keeping it for the whole 5 years that it is good for.

I am on cryselle and I like it. Its a generic brand so it is cheap but I have not had any side effects other than lighter periods.

I am on Depo Provera (the shot) that I get every 3 months. Listed side effects are;

Irregular menstrual periods, or no periods at all. Headaches. Nervousness. Depression. Dizziness Changes in appetite. Weight gain. Acne.

The only side effects I have personally experienced are no periods (which I consider a positive and was one of the main reasons I chose it) and slight weight gain (which is a side effect of a lot of hormonal birth controls). I also liked the option of not having to remember a pill every day.

Depo is one of those birth controls though that people either love or hate. I love it, but a friend of mine talks about it like it was the worst thing she’d ever experienced. I have the same sort of hatred for Mirena (IUD) that she has for depo. Its one of those things that you unfortunately might have to try a few different things before you find something you personally like the best

I have Mirena (IUD) and love it. I’ve had it for a year and a half and haven’t had any problems and my periods are so light. But everything is different for everyone so really it’s probably going to take some trial and error to find out what you like. Mirena has been the fourth hormonal birth control I’ve tried in the past 8 years and the one I’ve had the best experience with.

I just started Microgestin last month, and my wedding is in November. I would look into getting on BC before November if you plan on getting married in January. It typically takes 3 months for your body to get used to all the added hormones, and you should give yourself time to adjust and possibly change brands if needed. I started taking the pills mid cycle instead of the first day of my period, and I had breakthrough bleeding and spotting for 10 days and pretty bad cramps for a week. I’m now on my sugar pills, and everything has started to settle some. I haven’t had any side effects other than the bleeding, and that was likely from starting midcycle. Everyone reacts differently, so your best bet is to talk to your doctor about your best options.

sam-ee:  No weight gain (though I haven’t had that particular problem with any BC).  There is a smaller IUD called Skyla that was just approved that is good for only 3 years.  But you can have it taken out whenever you want.  In the US, IUDs are covered by the Affordable Care Act so you might not have to pay anything for it.

sam-ee:  I don’t know if it had a name, I just felt… weird. Nausea from time to time. Looking back (because I didn’t realise until I went off the pill) it affected my libido a little. Some women gain weight, but I didn’t. Honestly I’d still recommend it; and I suggest going on it now (or soon) so there’s time to change if you’re not happy with it.

I have been on the pill, Mirena, and Depovera. I didn’t like the pills, because I am a very forgetful person. The Mirena was fine for the most part. I got ovarian cysts occasionally, and the cramping from it was not pleasant, but wasn’t painful. And the Depo is great except you need to take calcium if you are going to be on it for long term…. I didn’t gain weight from any of them, but every person react differently. All you can do is try one for a couple months and see how it works for you. The joys of being an individual means you will get different answers from everyone! LOL. Oh, and with the pills you will need a back up method of birth control if you are on antibiotics….

Yasmin for me.

I tried mucking around with other brands/types and it was all bad. If I’m off Yasmin I have horrible acne. I went off for about 4 months a few years ago and then couldn’t take it anymore. Periodically when I’ve tried other brands (I wanted to shorten my period…) I get horrible acne and bloating, and it’s painful all the time. Each time I made sure to give it the 3 month ‘settling in’ time.

So now I don’t want to mess around anymore, I am interested in IUDs, but I don’t want to go through another round of pizza face or pain. Mostly the acne though.
