I’m glad you started this! My gyno just switched me to ortho tricyclen lo and want to know the side effects too! Generally, you won’t start noticing them until after the first month though.

I’ve been on ortho triciclyn lo for almost a year, and I’ve experienced no side effects at all.

Congratulations on your wedding 🙂

I’m on ortho low. Started it about your age, came off of it because of the cost… others were awful and now I’m back on it…and I love it! No side effects besides the fact my boobies are a little bigger (for me that’s a POSITIVE side affect, haha!)

For me, I had major mood swings with both ortho tri cyclen lo and regular ortho tri cyclen, I think because the levels of hormones change from week to week with the active pills. I might have gained some weight too, but that also might be my bad eating/exercise habits.

It’s different for everyone though. My nurse said that anytime you start a new kind of birth control pill, it takes about 3 months to see if side effects occur and go away, and if you’re experiencing bad side effects after 3 months of being on it, it might be time to try another kind.

I didnt have any bad side effects on it. Was maybe a little more emotional, but my cramps were way better, and my period got lighter. Good luck!

When I was on the pill, I was on Ortho Tri-Cyclen and then at some point switched to Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo.  I had to switch back to regular Ortho Tri-Cyclen because I was spotting too much between periods on the other one since it has a lower level of hormones.  Other than that, I never really had ongoing noticable side effects.

My best friend was on ortho, and I don’t know how long it took for the side effects to kick in, but it made her periods super heavy and painful, she had awful mood swings and felt depressed constantly. It was not good, so she switched to Junel, the generic for Lo Estrin.

So when I started taking BCP (only a few days ago, and like you, never been on BCP before!), I asked for Junel. I haven’t seen any side effects yet either.

i’ve been on it for years and have had no side effects to complain about, except that there aren’t many generic forms of the pill, so i end up paying more than i would if i was on a different kind. but, it works for me so i’m happy!

I was on Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo for about three years.  I actually didn’t notice any side effects until I went off the pill entirely.  After a month or two of being completely hormone free, I noticed a higher sex drive, a little weight loss, and overall more energy and a better mood.  I think the side effects were so gradual, I didn’t notice it.

I had horrible side effects with all birth control pills, even the lowest dose.  After about 3 months I started experiencing severe mood swings and depression.  I was a complete basket case.  So much so that I went off birth control all together for a few years.

Then about 5 years ago my doctor recommended Ortho Evera (the birth control patch) it is amazing.  I have zero side effects and don’t have to remember to take a pill every day.  I just put a new patch on each week for 3 weeks and then go a week without.  I think it has something to do with the way my body is processing the hormones.  Anyway I may sound like a commercial but I truly think it’s the best form of birth control out there.  at least for me.

Ms.smutty- do you mind me asking, where does the patch go? is it on the arm? what if you want to go swimming, or showering, how does that work?

I was 21 when I got married and started on ortho-tricyclen lo about 4 months before our wedding last June.

I had minimal side effects, but one very weird one–i started getting bad breath!  I did some research and apparently some bc produce a lot of phlegm. Anyway, that is one side effect i can’t wait to get over, but it’s nothing terrible. that and about 5 lbs of weight gain, which is a little harder than usual to burn off.

Other than that it’s also regulated my period to the hour almost.  I have noticed no extreme mood swings, nothing more than normal for PMS. and certainly haven’t had any loss of libido (which I’m so thankful for!)

@ Miss-Spunkin:

The great thing about the patch is that it can go anywhere. The only thing is that you want to put it in a different spot from week to week.  In the winter I usually put it on my upper outer theigh and just alternate legs each week.  In the summer I put it in a spot that you can’t see if I’m wearing a bathing suit.  Usually my lower back or something……different if you wear a bikini.

I do a ton of swimming in the summer; almost every day and it never falls off.  Also same with shower.  It doesn’t come off till you take it off.  It has also shortened my period cycle which the pill never did.  I now only have it for like 3 days.
