I don’t think black is necessarily too dark — but then, I would say that, since I’m getting married in the middle of the summer and am having black bridesmaids dresses. We’ll be accenting them with really brightly colored shoes and flowers.

@sweetnenz – Your bridesmaids in black dresses in Arizona will be even hotter than my bridesmaids in black dresses in Alabama! Yay for black in the summer.

Black is classic and even though it’s a spring/garden wedding, you can use the black dress as a blank canvas for some fun colored shoes and pretty, spring colored flowers!

I’m also getting married in May in the evening.  All my bridesmaid are wearing black. It’s classic and elegant.  I also let them pick their own (from David’s).  This way, they pick a dress they like, that fits them properly and is something they can wear again!

I am getting married this May and we are having a night wedding with black floor length dresses. We are adding a little color with the shoes and flowers. I think you should have what ever color you want!

I agree with the above posters- black is classic & elegant and almost always appropriate. If you are worried about it being too dark of a color palette, give them some brightly colored flowers or accessories to lighten the look up a bit.

I’m also getting married in May of next year and I’m having black bridesmaid dresses with an aqua sash to add a splash of color. I think black works year round!

I am getting married next May… one year from today! My MOH is wearing a black dress with a pool blue sash and my BM are wearing pool blue dresses. All short dresses with pool blue shoes. You could have your matron of honor and MOH be in black so they stand out and then accent their dresses with whatever color your BM are wearing… I too was worried about black in Spring but I went on David’s Bridal website and used their Dress your Party feature to see how it looked. And, with all the tuxes the black dresses look really sharp. Good luck!

I think black is a great and flattering option, even in spring.  My girls wore long, strapless chocolate brown silk dresses in my May 2008 wedding and carried bright green flowers, and I loved it.  I think it was just a nice neutral, not overly fall-ish.

I would suggest shorter dresses if you really want to be springy.  A-line silhouettes are flattering on everyone. Empire waists are slimming and tend to flatter everyone as well.

I’m a BM in a wedding at the end of next month and our dresses are floor length black and I do have to say I was a little surprised by the choice. Granted I have no idea what her colors are, what flowers we’re holding – none of that. It’s kind of been like pulling teeth to get any wedding info out of her throughout this whole process. Case in point: the wedding is June 27th. There were no STDs and we got our invitations LAST WEEK. She’s also doing her ceremony in a small chapel with no A/C, so let me get back to you after the wedding and let you know if I sweated off all my makeup or not. That being said, I do think black is classic and elegant (not to mention SLIMMING!) and I own so much black clothing its ridiculous, so we’ll see what happens.

My BM’s are wearing black also and my wedidng is in August. It is great for any season! I have 11 BM’s with all different shapes. I chose Jim Hjelm. His dresses are so nice and it is flattering on all body types.

Good Luck!

I think black dresses are always a classic look.  My wedding was an evening wedding a month ago, and I had my BM choose their own black dresses from JCrew.  This worked for us, because the gals are all different shapes and sizes.  They were able to choose a dress that they felt comfortable in AND that they thought they’d actually wear again.  They all looked fabulous and the photos are awesome.  We did a lot of our photos outside and the color contrast between the black dresses and the green grass/blue sky look great.

Black is so classic and can be done at any time of year in my opinion! Go for it, and if you want, spruce them up with popping flowers or shoes!
