I'm pretty sure it needs to be a xerox or laser printer print-out. Is there a kinko's nearby? Otherwise, maybe just a grocery store with a copy machine?
Some printers work and others do not. It all depends on the level of carbon in the ink. I have an HP printer which works great. I make sure to use only the black ink (I actually just remove the color cartridge to make sure of this.) I've heard others have had luck with HP printers as well.
If you do use a photocopy don't forget the blue filter!
Good luck :)
Here's a link to printers that people have used and reviews... not sure if you can see this if you are not a member of yahoogroups for gocco printers though... let me know.

Thank you all for the input! Turned out the self-serve copiers were still open so I made a xerox of them from the inkjet. I'm going to give that a try for this demo and then plan for laser printouts for the real deal!
tiramisu: Couldn't see the Yahoo! Groups post. I have to be a member, I think?
oh sorry about that! here's a summary (again these are just personal experiences of people in the group- no guarantees!):
works great:
HP models 1020, 2100, 2605, 3050, 3500, 5500, 5610, 5MP, 5Plus, C4280 (this is mine!)
Epson Stylus CX 3810, Epson Photo Stylus
Lexmark Optra S+T
doesn't work:
epson stylus models 640-1000
mixed opinion:
brother printers
Hope that is helpful!
oh and ps- that yahoo group is great to join for lots of good tips and photos if you'll be using your gocco a lot :)
it needs to be toner not ink... hence laser works but not ink based printers.
You don't have to use a laser or xerox copy. Some inkets work just fine.
My hp photosmart 1215 inkjet works perfectly and saves me from having to run to kinkos or officemax!

I'm hoping to do a trial run for my save the dates tonight, but all of the local printing places are closed. Could I use a black ink only printout from my desktop inkjet printer? Or would it not work?
