    Hello ladies,

I've been invited to a black tie required wedding in Miami in January.  What does one wear to this type of event?  Any help, suggestions, etiquette would be oh-so-helpful!

foR men black tie is usually a tuxedo and women something really formal. Maybe a long nice dress?

To me BT = floor length dress, but you could probably glam up a tea length with the right accessories.

Ugh I had this issue with a "black tie optional" (which to me is really just a passive aggressive way to say black tie). I TRIED TRIED TRIED so hard to find a floor length dress that wasn't hideous and prom-y and it was an epic fail. I ended up wearing a satin black dress just above the knee and glamming it up with some sparkly jewelry. There just aren't that many floor length fancy dresses out there that aren't heavy and ugly or like rhinestoned out of control. The one I found that wasn't ugly was also like $500 and, um, no.

I don't think it is the worst thing in the world to glam up a shorter dress with accessories for a black tie wedding. People will I'm sure disagree with me on that but whatever.

I agree, tux for guys and long formal dress for ladies.

Ugh, so fun! I wish I could go to a black tie event/party!

In our area, black tie events are pretty common.  I always wear a floor-length dress for black tie.  If it's black tie optional, you can get away with a shorter dress.  Bluefly.com and nordstrom.com both have a huge selection of floor-length dresses, and BCBG is usually my go-to designer.

Black tie is pretty common around here as well.  It's tuxes for men and floorlength formal gowns for ladies.  Macys, Nordstroms and Bloomingdales always have a huge selection.

Thanks for the input, ladies.  Have you seen shorter dresses at black tie weddings? (It's definitely "black tie required", sadly, and not "optional")  Black tie weddings are not really common where I live, and so I hate the idea of buying a long gown that I will never, repeat, never wear again.

Oh, if only my old prom dresses still fit! ;)

I've been to a few black tie weddings in South Carolina, and the super-majority of the women were in floor-length dresses, with some of the younger women in cocktail dresses.  I would definitely go floor-lenght for black tie.

Black Tie wedding you must wear a long gown!  I work in the wedding industry and black tie = long dresses.  Some black tie they require you to wear long and black, some only long any color!  If you have questions let me know!  I can help you find a long gown that would be perfect without spending a ton....just let me know if you have any questions!

I went to a black tie wedding this summer, and although there were a few girls in short dresses they looked pretty out-of-place ... I would def recommend wearing a floor-length dress.  I actually wasn't sure either, so I asked the groom for guidance and he asked the bride and she said "most women will be wearing long gowns", so I got my answer :)  I ended up borrowing one from my friend so it was no big deal.
