I’d go full length in case some of your guest go full on black tie – you don’t want them to feel overdressed.

We are having a semi formal affair and I went with long dresses. I feel it is more formal then a shorter dress. But if the guys are wearing bow ties or full tux then they ladies would look nice in a long dress. Good luck.

mine was black tie optional and my girls wore floor length. Originally I was going to have them in tea length, but when my dress ended up being really formal, I opted for long for them.

I would go for long… I think some guests will be in floor length dresses (I likely would be…), so you would want your BMs to be equally dressed up 🙂

I would say since it’s in the fall and black tie optional, a floor length gown will look better and more appropriate.

I don’t think there is a steadfast “rule,” but I think long would be more appropriate.

I like to think that there are no RULES for anything, do what makes you happy!!! That said, we’re having a cocktail attire wedding and although I was sure I wanted the BMs in short/cocktail length dresses, when I saw them in floor length I just knew that it looked better and more appropriate given a fairly formal event at a fairly formal venue. But it wouldn’t have been INAPPROPRIATE for them to wear shorter dresses…just wouldn’t have looked as coherent in my case…see what you like ON them in person if you can. I thought they’d be wearing bright blue shorter dresses and they ended up in navy long dresses once I saw things in person 🙂

We had a black tie invited wedding and my girls wore long dresses, (as did most of our female guests).  I was a bridesmaid in a wedding that was black tie optional and we wore short dresses.  All of us agreed that were were the most casual ones there.

@Thea S:  It is best the bridesmaid dresses go full length. After all, it is a little cold in fall especially at night. Also, long dresses have a formal graceful look.
