I wish we could cherry pick cultural transactions. Like, we can give you guys unlimited free shipping and….(trying to think of something else the US does better and coming up at a loss, haha). And you guys can give us better universal healthcare and better manners?

I don’t think it is a big deal.  I was always puzzled by the Boxing Day sales, “hey, you’ve just spent a ton of money on all your holiday gifts, now come buy more crap!”

I have been living in the states for two years now and went shopping on Black Friday, I don’t go for electronics or anything where people trample each other at 2 in the morning.  I just get some clothes and go to Sephora.

Hi, Central European here. This is obviously foreign territory for me but I’m curious. Could someone please explain to me why the shopping frenzy after Thanksgiving is called Black Friday? It sounds so tragic!

@MsMeow:  Stores make so much money off of the shopping from that one day/weekend that it puts them “in the black” for the year, profits-wise.

It could be worse.  In the US, some stores will be opening at 8pm on Thanksgiving day.  WTF?  Can’t people just enjoy their Thanksgivings and wait another day to go shopping?!

@bleusteel: This. Give people a holiday! I went to my frist Black Friday last year (I’m Canadian). What’s the difference between the stores opening at 8 a.m. on Friday, or 8 p.m. on Thursday? Let people enjoy their families!

I love Cyber Monday but finally stopped shopping on Black Friday last year.  It’s just not worth it and the online ads are super awesome.  I don’t have to leave my house to order or receive them and they almost always come with free shipping.  Why drive to the store and deal with the masses when I can shop in my jammies?

@AB Bride:  I WANT AN OCTOBER VERSION!!!!

Also, it’s getting ridiculous in the US.  I was fine with being the crazy person that got up at 3am to go shopping once a year.  But I’m not ok with leaving the table from Thanksgiving dinner to go at 8pm ON THANKSGIVING.

Let’s push it back past midnight.

@AB Bride:  Yeah, I saw those flyers too and wasn’t overly thrilled.  I’m not a shopper though.

It just sucks that holidays just become so commercialized.

Thanksgiving was my fave holiday since it used to be pretty much not commercial except for the turkey farms but now it’s just all about black friday and not at all about thanksgiving.  Every year it is exponentially worse I think.

It’s amazing that people die literally die for this each year.  never been shopping on Black Friday, never will.
