I know my church has a Blessing of the Animals on St. Francis of Assisi day (he was the patron Saint of animals).

St. Francis is the patron saint of animals and the environment. He preached to the animals and called them his brothers. The blessing is because they are also creatures of God and thus deserve to be blessed. I have three statues of St. Francis in my yard and I am not Catholic! A lot of non-Catholic churches also hold this event.

As stated by @luluvohn: it is tied by to St Francis of Assisi, the Patron Saint of Animals… and the Blessings are usually done on his Feast Day (October 4th) which is celebrated by the Catholic & Anglican Church.

Wikipedia – St Francis of Assisi =  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_of_Assisi

The reasoning is that animals are living beings as well… and in partnership with mankind.

For more info, you can always GOOGLE… St Francis Blessing of the Animals

Hope this helps,

@hollyberry4:  I took mine to be blessed this year. We loaded up the car with my family’s 2 dogs, FI’s and my cat and my snake (in his Tupperware) and went to the church. It’s exactly as PPs stated.

The same reason people get blessed! Most human religious ceremonies include a blessing, whether that is regular Sunday church or a wedding or a baptism or whatever. Some churches have a yearly ceremony that blesses pets. Because people love their pets. That’s all.

EDIT: I suppose that leaves the thought of why anyone (person or pets) gets blessed and I don’t really know the religious answer for this. For me, I get a certain peaceful feeling getting a blessing. It’s a bit like meditation, trying to clear my mind and focus on the blessing. Makes me feel good. So that’s why I like blessings.
