I had my room bloc at the Marriott Downtown. I had two choices, but either way, you get a special rate.
1. For less than 20 rooms, there wasn't a minimum number of rooms. If only 2 rooms were reserved for our wedding, then that was that. The downside is that if more guests needed rooms, there might not be rooms available. The hotel also would not be obligated to extend the special group rate.
2. For more than 20 rooms, we had to guarantee that 80% of the rooms that we wanted would be booked. If not, we would have to pay the difference. For instance, if I had asked the Marriott to reserve a bloc of 40 rooms, 32 rooms had to be booked for the wedding.
In the end, we had a lot of out of towners than expected. The Marriot was nice enough to extend the special rate for the additional room reservations.
We didn't have to- but we're using a resort. They will keep X number of rooms open for us and then start filling them with other people starting 2 months before the wedding. So the only catch is people need to call in QUICKLY and reserve. But we don't have to pay a dime.
@allurex - Thanks, that's very helpful! I think I'll contact the Marriott Downtown as well. We won't need many rooms, maybe 7-8 tops, so that sounds perfect.
My wedding is on NYE so I wanted to make sure I locked in a price now. I'm blocked at the westin for 149/night and were not held liable for any rooms not used. They are extremely nice and accomadating.

Sorry, there are no users yet.
So I have no idea how this works!
If we reserve a block of rooms at a hotel, do they give us a special rate? If we don't fill them, do we get charged? How far in advance should we call to reserve?
I'm totally clueless!
